Overview

On these 24 selections featuring the immortal tenor sax soloist Coleman Hawkins, there are a variety of different bands he has played with. They certainly include ensembles led by Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter, Spike Hughes, and himself, and likely Duke Ellington. Unfortunately, there is no information attributing them on this collection, which is a major shortcoming. Ten of the selections are recognized standards, the set ends with his classic "Body and Soul," and perhaps collectors might be intrigued by the many obscure tunes included. At a budget price this collection could appeal to the novice or student, but fans of the Bean will have this material or be drawn to the many available Classics label recordings, which provide better selections and specific details on what was a fruitful period for Hawkins.
