Overview

The beloved Song of the Lioness series has enthralled fans for decades, and now an even larger audience can revel in these adventure-filled fantasies, which are in trade paperback for the first time and feature newly designed covers.

In Alanna, Alanna of Trebond disguises herself as a boy and makes her way to the castle of King Roald to being training as a page. As she masters the skills necessary for battle, Alanna must also learn to control her heart. This challenge is even greater in In the Hand of the Goddess, where Alanna becomes a squire to Prince Jonathan, who knows the secret of her identity. But when a mysterious sorcerer threatens the prince’s life, it will take all of Alanna’s skill, strength, and magical power to protect him. Her efforts result in knighthood, and in The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, Alanna seeks adventure in a vast desert of Tortall, where, after a life-threatening duel, she becomes the first female shaman to an ancient tribe. Her warrior wisdom is put to the test in Lioness Rampant, because Tortall is in grave danger that only Alanna can prevent. As she takes on her archenemy, Alanna discovers she has a future worthy of her mythic past—both as a warrior and a woman.

Pursuing her desire to be a knight, Alanna learns many things in her role as squire to Prince Jonathan, but fears Duke Roger, an ambitious sorcerer with whom she knows she will one day have to deal. "I don't want to fall in love. I just want to be a warrior maiden." Still disguised as a boy, Alanna becomes a squire to none other than the prince of the realm. Prince Jonathan is not only Alanna's liege lord, he is also her best friend -- and one of the few who knows the secret of her true identity. But when a mysterious sorceror threatens the prince's life, it will take all of Alanna's skill, strength, and magical power to protect him -- even at the risk of revealing who she really is ... Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's second adventure continues the saga of a girl who dares to follow her dreams -- and the magical destiny that awaits her. Alanna's journey continues.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Alanna of Trebond continues her masquerade as Alan in this, the second book in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (Random, 1990). The story spans Alanna's fours years as Prince Jonathan's squire. During this time, Alanna participates in her first war, battles against Jonathan's evil uncle, Duke Roger, meets the Great Mother Goddess and experiences first love, all the while maintaining her guise as a boy. Actress Trini Alvardo perfectly captures the essence of Alanna by giving her the uncertainty of a girl on the verge of womanhood combined with the steel determination and strength of a squire preparing for the battle to become a knight. Alvarado uses slight changes in her voice to vividly give life to a large cast of characters. While familiarity with the first book in the series, Alanna: The First Adventure (Random, 1983), will enhance this story, it is by no means necessary. Add this timeless story to collections where magic, adventure, and strong female characters are in demand.-Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

If your buying the book for your child.

I think you should read this book, before you let your child read it. i read this book once, when i was youger. You see there's a little romantic relationship, between two of the characters. After a little bit of kissing, and such. One of the characters runs off, then changes her mind. It does not go in to it, but it does plant the idea in your childs head. It does this in all of the books after this. This is just my opinion. But I know, I would not let my childern read this book. They would at least have to be 16.

    I love this series!

I have loved this series ever since I was in jr. high. I borrowed them from a friend at the time, but I'm finally glad to have my own set. I don't like the new cover art, and that's what BAM only sells now. It's hard to find this cover anymore in stores, unless it's used. So I was very glad I was still able to get these online through B&N.

    Great read

It's a pretty easy read, and Alanna(for me) is an enjoyable character. I really love everything about this book. But, WHY does EVERY good book has to be ruined by so many sex scenes? So, if you don't mind that, or you don't mind skipping over it- I'd say, read it, it'll be worth your while.

    Good

Still good, but similar complaints as the first. I really like this series, but I would have loved it if I had read it when I was younger. It can be a little simplistic at times and the story resolves a little too cleanly. Also, the way it jumps so far ahead only to large important parts sometimes makes you feel like you miss the little character interactions. But that being said, I like all the main characters and Pierce did in a good job in the pace of the way the people close to Alanna slowly begin to learn who she is.
