Overview

The affluent suburb of Cheshire, Connecticut, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. William Petit and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to raise their two lovely daughters… Until July 23, 2007, when, according to police, two ex-cons invaded the Petit home hoping to embark on a routine robbery—one that would ultimately prove deadly.

What unfolded at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive was a tragic and horrifying sequence of events that shocked a community and made headlines across the nation. Before the morning was over, Mrs. Hawke-Petit and one of her daughters would be sexually assaulted, the entire house would go up in flames, and only Dr. Petit—his head bloodied, his legs bound—would manage to escape with his life. With the help of neighbors and local police, the two suspects were soon found and captured. Now, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes await trial for murder IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

    would not read this book

I will NOT read this book although I know some people will. I feel this book makes the monster who committed this horrific crime into a celebrity. He was caught red handed. Do we really want to know what he told the author during prison visits about his childhood or his thoughts on fatherhood? The ONLY thing I want to read about this case is about the VICTIMS and when justice is served. We live in a country of free speech and I dont take that for granted. Sometimes we dont like what people say or write about. Im not for banning books or censoring but I will exercise my right to NOT buy a book that lets someone make money off someone else's trajedy. This happens too often in our society we make monsters into celebrites and forget the victims names. They are Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela. Dr. William Petit is the husband and father who survived. They are the ones I will focus on...

    Scary and well written

True crime novels are the most disturbing because they are true. But they are a reflection of our society unfortunately. This one is a good read about a horrible event. I'm not sure why the author needs to be excorciated. I read one post on a website that said the author was as bad as the killer. Really!!!!??? Have we desensitized ourselves so much to crime that we equate author and killer.

    I Also Recommend:

    Read it in a day

As a resident of Cheshire, I have read this book and the one that came out last year. I do not agree with the writers reasoning to put this book out now. (stated he needed money) He could have done some better research on Cheshire. Seems he drove through town and decided that was good enough. The book is about 85% acurate in details outside the house during the crime. Many important public details were left out in the authors rush to get this published. The claim of "8 shocking pictures" is B.S. - nothing shocking about pictures used by the media. The author and the publisher should come to Cheshire for a book signing.

    Don't Read This

This book is 200 pages of "Poor Criminal" and about 20 pages about the victims. I am not sure what Brian McDonald is trying to do here but he is SO sympathetic to these awful killers that it is nearly impossible to stomach this book. VERY Disappointing.

When something becomes more than should be tolerated...

I have not read this book nor would I ever do so. The only reason I gave it one star is that it is a requirement that the book be "rated." My life is informed by many happy years in Connecticut and while I believe in freedom of speech with every fiber of my being I think that Brian McDonald should be deeply ashamed. The murder of the family of Dr. Petit was as shocking and senseless as can be imagined. All this book has done is give the two accused men a chance to lay blame at one another's feet. There are very few people in the entire New England region that are unaware of this tragedy and change of venue for this trial would have to be on another continent. One can only hope that the writing of this unauthorized, unwanted, misbegotten "book" will not hinder justice being done. I deeply wish that people would not read or buy this thing.

    more from this reviewer

An attempt to capitalize on the tragedies of others.

This is a quickly told tale based on several letters and interviews with one of the defendants in this case. It is as unbalanced and incomplete as it is biased and one-sided. Does the author really think that there is going to be something in this killer's past that explains his actions? Does he think that these are the first two crime partners to blame one another at the first opportunity and to accept none of the responsibility for themselves? The best thing about this book was the fact that it was inexpensive. It isn't worth a dime over $5.00.

Having said all of that I must say that I also believe in the author's right to tell the tale and the readers' right to read it or not.

Leave this one on the shelf, it is not worth your time but be glad that the choice to do so is yours to make.

    Must read

I am looking forward to reading the book "In the Middle of the Night" regarding the murders in Cheshire Ct two years ago. All agree that this was a horrific crime, it was a high profile crime covered nationally. We are fortunate to have this written by Brian McDonald. Brian is an outstanding author. His book Safe Harbor murder in Nantucket was a sensitive depiction of a senseless murder. His tribute to Beth could help you to know the victim in a personal way. The Cheshire murders are a sensitive issue in Connecticut but it is a story of national interest. Brian's interview with one of the alleged murderers is an example of Brian's investigative and thorough coverage of this tragic event. There has been much written about this crime, yet the book" In the Middle of the Night" will shed additional perspective on the crime that has shaken up an entire state.
I am confident that Brian McDonald's portrayal will be accurate and thought provoking.

    Very boring

I was really looking forward to reading this book being a CT resident and it being a true story. The book was very boring. I know way too much about the killer's now. Stuff no one would want to or care to know. The author must have had to put a lot of filler in, I'd say 98% of the book. I finally started skipping chapters because I really didn't care about knowing every single aspect of the killer's lives and their family. There were only about 8 pages of interest fact about what actually happened and that was very sparse. I didn't care how the book jumped around also. If you want to be greatly disappointed in every way, I'd recommend buying the book.

    WAIT until after the trials!

This book should not be available until after the trials! Yes, the author has a right to publish his book, but not at the expense of justice. The author, publisher and book stores should have had at the very least a moral obligation to wait until after the trial.
I will not read nor support the publisher nor bookstores the make this book available before the trials.
