Sinister Visions

Shamanic counselor Sabbie Dare doesn’t believe her troubled client, Cliff Houghton, is capable of evil. But Cliff has become the prime suspect in the murder of a young boy after the police catch him lurking in the moors where the body was found.

Continuing the therapy they’d begun together, Sabbie recovers disturbing childhood memories from Cliff’s subconscious, shedding light on a spate of crimes that terrorized the English countryside twenty years earlier. And when a second child goes missing, Sabbie must piece together fragments of the buried past before another innocent victim is robbed of his life.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The region of Southwest England featured in Milton's suspenseful and paranormal-infused debut was terrorized years ago by a child abductor and murderer who was never caught. Now the pattern is beginning anew, and the police jail Cliff Houghton, a local odd duck who has been acting suspiciously. Cliff is a client of Sabrina (Sabbie) Dare, a professional shaman. Sabbie works with Cliff until he is able to bring up his terrifying suppressed past; it seems that Cliff was kidnapped as a child himself, but he managed to escape his captors. Using his images to guide her dreams, Sabbie finds evidence that can exonerate Cliff, but her discovery also puts her straight in the abductor's line of sight. It doesn't help that her ex-lover is causing chaos at the same time. Thankfully one detective, DS Reynard Buckley, takes Sabbie's dreams seriously. VERDICT Sabbie Dare is the most compelling protagonist I've met this year, and Milton's tale is riveting. Perhaps readers will figure things out before Sabbie does, but the visceral suspense Milton creates is commendable, not to mention terrifying. I like pairing her work with Elly Griffiths's atmospheric English mysteries.
Kirkus Reviews
Children's author Milton's adult debut creates a mystical world in which the secret to a missing child may be locked in the subconscious of a leading suspect. When shamanic counselor and herbal healer Sabbie Dare (don't call her Sabrina) takes on Cliff Houghton as a client, even her uncanny powers can't tell what's coming next. Cliff has a dark feeling about him, and as Sabbie enters his unconsciousness, her otter spirit guide, Trendle, has serious trepidations about her travels. What Sabbie finds in Cliff's mind runs parallel to the case of some local missing boys, and though Cliff claims not to know anything about the disappearances, he is curiously drawn to the cases. Unfortunately, local police detective sergeant Reynard Buckley is also drawing parallels between Cliff and the return of what the locals are calling the Wetland Murderer. He demands that Sabbie tell him all she knows about Cliff. Rey isn't persuaded when she asserts Cliff's innocence, and Cliff's increasingly suspicious and inexplicable behavior doesn't help his case. Even so, Sabbie trusts her instincts and keeps on investigating in the hope of clearing Cliff's name. Now, if only those instincts would kick in concerning her lover, Ivan, who may be more trouble than he's worth. A fast-moving thriller likely to draw in readers despite, or perhaps because of, its bizarre heroine.
