In The Name of The Father
Over 6 million children were attending parochial private schools in the 1950's and '60's every year. Abuse was rampant and severe corporal punishment was the norm. Fear, shame, intimidation, indoctrination and the constant threat of a firey hell for those who didn't follow the rules prevailed. Holy Trinity Church in Westford, New Jersey is the setting. The curtain is drawn back. Murder, molestation, physical and mental abuse, and embezzeled church funds are investigated by the local authorities. The seperation of Church and State becomes a gray area. Will local authorities step in or will the Church as usual handle it's business privately? Joey Michel, an eight year old altar boy and student, takes us through the maze of mysticism and reality and shows us the life long damage that was done to thousands of innocent kids while the world stood by in awe of an institution that had withstood the test of time. No one ever questioned what went on behind closed doors. In a small town in Central New Jersey a Jewish female detective and a bachelor Irish cop decided that enough was enough. They were going to protect the children whatever it took. It was the beginning of the end of all the institutional secrecy. The well kept secrets were about to slowly become public over the next several decades. But what about the 10's of millions of children that were subjected to that abuse? How many never recovered? How many continue to fight off the demons? How many have given up?
IN The Name Of The Father takes us behind closed doors as seen through the eyes of an eight year old 3rd grader at Holy Trinity Grammar School in 1951. Those of us that experienced those times in the 50's and '60's are now retirees that can vividly describe those times as if it all happened yesterday. Today there are millions of stories and 10's of millions of recovering catholics. Each has a story to tell. Each has been trying to forget and let go. Although this book has a fictional story line, all the events are based on personal accounts from many interviews. It happened....and the world and the authorities stood by and watched.
This story is dedicated to all of us still in recovery.
