Overview

For as long as he can remember, Matt has wanted to play basketball. Now, as he tries out for the team at his new middle school, he realizes that the easy days of elementary ball are over and that this is a much more serious game. Dealing with a hard-driving coach, competitive teammates and his own insecurities in a new school, Matt needs to call on all his skills, both on and off the court, to make the team and keep his head above water. When he is involved, albeit unwittingly, in tagging a store with racist graffiti, Matt finds himself in more trouble than he bargained for. And when he fights back against an aggressive teammate and is threatened with suspension from the team, he learns that it is not only game-time decisions that count, but also the choices made after the crowd has gone home and the gym is silent.

"Author Rud's effective use of language, his understanding of young people and his appreciation of sport make this a good book for young readers, especially boys. Excellent"
Children's Literature
Matt's greatest dream is to play varsity basketball when he gets to South Side Middle School. He and three of his friends have practiced faithfully all summer and have done body building and endurance exercises with that one goal in mind. Unfortunately, he meets the star of the team just before school starts and it appears Grant Jackson has taken an immediate dislike to Matt. Matt does make the team, becoming the backup player for Grant, the point guard. This does not help their relationship. Grant is into drinking, stealing, and spray painting storefronts. He tricks Matt into coming along on one of these escapades and although Matt does not actively participate, he does get into trouble. Matt tries to avoid Grant, but feels pushed to defend his friends and ends up striking a punch that breaks Grant's nose. Matt's mom and his older brother are positive influences and always supportive of him—even when he makes some serious mistakes—exhibiting a strong family life in a single-parent home. Much of the story is filled with play-by-play descriptions of basketball games and practice sessions. Young basketball players and fans will identify with some of the characters and sequences. 2005, Orca, Ages 9 to 13.
—Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

Matt was momentarily stunned, but he bounced up quickly, wiping the trickle of blood from the side of his mouth.

One look at the hard-nosed, sneering Grant Jackson standing above him told Matt no apology was forthcoming. "Just remember, rook," Grant hissed quietly. "I'm the starting point guard on this team."
