Until this 1995 album, Darnell had been know for his synthesizer interpretations of Native American ceremonies. In the Presence of Angels is decidedly "western," following in the lush impressionistic footsteps of Debussy and the romantic innocence of Mike Rowland Fairy Ring. Joining Darnell, who plays synthesizer and grand piano, are harpist Rachel Starr Williams, violinist Malcolm Watson, and flautist Bryan Savage. Savage's flute is echoed electronically to transport the listener to the halls of eternity, while the comforting sounds of seagulls and surf offer peaceful respites between eddies of golden light and the rhapsodic melodies of the grand piano. The piano's melody on "Angels of Hope" is fullblooded, yet conveys the essence of redemption. It's lush, delicious, and gorgeous--in short, In the Presence of Angels invites the listener to let down one's guard and wallow in beauty.
