Editorial Reviews

Booklist
“Rappaport presents an eclectic group of Jewish Americans … The watercolor art is attractive and adds flavor to the biographies.”
Publishers Weekly
The creative trio behind We Are the Many: A Picture Book of American Indians turns its focus to the stories of 13 notable Jewish Americans in this compendium of brief and colorful biographies. Famous figures such as magician/escape artist Harry Houdini, polio expert Dr. Jonas Salk and film director Steven Spielberg get equal billing with track and field star Lillian Copeland and Jacob W. Davis, who invented the design of the jeans that made Levi Strauss a brand name. Each spread contains a one-page synopsis of a pivotal or defining moment in the subject's life and a full-page watercolor portrait of the same subject in action. Rappaport's entries-most of which focus on strength of spirit and overcoming adversity-shine with energy and pride while delivering key historical information. From this diverse collection, readers are bound to come away with brand new information or at least some new insight on familiar faces. Wright and Hu's earthy palette and soft-edged lines bring to life, in a concrete and memorable way, the accomplishments of these people, presented in the context of their time. Ages 5-9. (Mar.) School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-In several short paragraphs each, Rappaport tries to re-create a "defining" moment in the lives of 13 notable figures. Her subjects range from Asser Levy, whose letters of petition to the New Amsterdam council helped to gain rights for Jewish settlers in the colony, to Steven Spielberg and his creation of the character E. T. More than half of each spread is covered by a watercolor illustration of the subject amid a scene depicting the described moment. In some instances, this format does not leave sufficient space for an appealing introduction to the person. The author lists some of her resources, which include several first-person accounts. Rappaport has clearly done her homework, but while her sketchy introductions (some of which include dialogue) may inspire some youngsters to seek out further information on these notables, the book is very unexceptional, and not useful for reports.-Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
These one-page sketches of 13 Jewish-American figures attempt to serve as an introduction to the one "defining moment" that shaped their lives or professions. Using information taken from books, articles, personal accounts, diaries, journals and interviews, Rappaport recreates, with some drama and undocumented dialogue, momentary accomplishments or significant episodes. While some of her portrayals work well to capture the nuance of the influential event, others are not as obvious. For example, she tells clearly of Asser Levy's fight against anti-Semitism in colonial New Amsterdam, Ernestine Rose's participation in the suffrage movement and Jacob W. Davis's invention of the use of copper rivets on miners' pants leading to the famous Levi Strauss jeans. But at the same time it's not obvious as to what Houdini or photographer Solomon Nunes Carvalho's defining moments really are. Even the last description for Steven Spielberg is a bit muddled, ending with his foremost deed of establishing the "Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation." While many of these figures deserve a broader approach than these snippets, this collection may at least spark some interest for further reading. (sources, bibliography, Web sites) (Nonfiction. 7-9)
