TAKE BACK THE BLOODY VEIL

With a new destroyer command under him, now-Captain Daniel Leary and master spy Lady Adele Mundy are off to the backwater Veil region on a diplomatic mission. Did we say diplomatic Yeah, right. What they find is a local warlord ready to throw Cinnabar from the region, a vile aristocrat dealing in slave labor—and a huge Republic of Cinnabar Navy defeat that has thrown the entire sector under the crushing heel of the vile Alliance.

Time to fight back—and that Alliance stronghold in the nearby Monserrat cluster looks awfully vulnerable. Okay, actually, it looks impregnable to any but a determined Leary and Mundy. But should they achieve the impossible yet again, they do have an occupying army nearby—if only they can free it from its chains!

Meet the Author

Vietnam veteran, former lawyer, former bus driver, and now bestselling author, David Drake tells a military story like no other. His readers recognize that he can take them where no one else can, with gut-wrenching description that puts them face-to-face with the enemy, and in the midst of the action right on the battlefield. He helped create the audience for mercenary military science fiction with his best-selling ""Hammer's Slammers"" books. Drake graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa, majoring in history (with honors) and Latin. His stint at Duke University Law School was interrupted for two years by the U.S. Army, where he served as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam and Cambodia. Drake has a wife, a son, and various pets.

    I Also Recommend:

Interesting characters, unusual technology, decent plot

I've grown to like the characters over the course of the RCN series of books, although the universe and its technology have not resonated with me. I liked this volume quite a lot, and the principal reason was that it was somewhat more emotional than the earlier stories. You care for the two protagonists and in the back of your mind is the hope that one day they will fall in love and marry.

Excellent book in a great series.

The books in this series are clearly inspired by the Aubrey/Maturin novel of Patrick O'Brien, but David Drake brings his own unique talents to create a wonderful and ever-surprising series. If you like high adventure you will like this book.

    I Also Recommend:

    Leary & Mundy begin again.

Daniel Leary's worth is finally noticed by The Cinnabar Navy, Adele Mundy continues to grow as a member of The Cinnabar navy. They begin a new adventure in a new, (relatively) larger, and more powerful warship. Their enemies haven't changed, but new things are afoot.
David Drake continues to flesh out his characters, and I continue to consider this a story about my friends. I root for Daniel, and Adele, like they are my teammates. I would recommend that you start with the first book of the series, but that might be my own prejudices showing though. I have them all in hardcover, and have begun buying the paperbacks for the first reread.
