Overview

Captain Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy are Back in Action, and the Stakes Have Never Been Higher. First Time in Paperback for This Novel in Best-Selling David Drake’s Popular RCN Space Adventure Series.

“Drake improves a classic military sf saga with fast action, wonderfully complex politics, and some of the most insightful characterization of his career.” —Booklist

Daniel Leary is Cinnabar's most successful space captain; his friend, Lady Adele Mundy, is its most efficient spy—but they've got their hands full this time as they face:

  • A Cinnabar Senator furious at losing an election—and still powerful enough to make her anger deadly.
  • The boy ruler of a star cluster who thinks he's a god—and who can sign the death warrants of even Cinnabar officials if a mad whimsy tells him to.
  • A world of slaves and escaped slaves, where the most savage beasts in the jungle used to be human.
  • An enemy base that could shrug off attack by powerful battlefleets—but which must fall to a single cruiser if Cinnabar is to survive.

From palace to reeking jungle, from gunfights in grimy hangars to the flagship's bridge during a sprawling space battle, Leary and Mundy are in the thick of it again. Watch the galaxy explode—IN THE STORMY RED SKY

The books in this series are clearly inspired by the Aubrey/Maturin novel of Patrick O'Brien, but David Drake brings his own unique talents to create a wonderful and ever-surprising series. If you like high adventure you will like this book.

Daniel Leary's worth is finally noticed by The Cinnabar Navy, Adele Mundy continues to grow as a member of The Cinnabar navy. They begin a new adventure in a new, (relatively) larger, and more powerful warship. Their enemies haven't changed, but new things are afoot. David Drake continues to flesh out his characters, and I continue to consider this a story about my friends. I root for Daniel, and Adele, like they are my teammates. I would recommend that you start with the first book of the series, but that might be my own prejudices showing though. I have them all in hardcover, and have begun buying the paperbacks for the first reread.

Cinnabar Forever! Another good one in the Leary Series.

I've grown to like the characters over the course of the RCN series of books, although the universe and its technology have not resonated with me. I liked this volume quite a lot, and the principal reason was that it was somewhat more emotional than the earlier stories. You care for the two protagonists and in the back of your mind is the hope that one day they will fall in love and marry.
