Overview

Fans of the historical romances of Sabrina Jeffries, Loretta Chase, and Jo Beverly will enjoy this sexy, award-winning romance by New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern.

Meet the Merry Widows – a group of respectable ladies with a secret pact that is anything but respectable! The five friends who act as patronesses of charity balls are assured of money and position. None are interested in marrying again. But they have no intention of forsaking physical passion for the rest of their lives. Instead, they make a daring pact to seek out lovers for the pure pleasure of it.

Marianne Nesbitt adored her late husband, David, but the racy reminiscences of the Merry Widows make her wonder if she missed something special. Might she find it now through a love affair? Uncertain how to go about it, she asks Adam Cazenove, an old friend and notorious rake, to tutor her in the arts of seduction.

The brazen request turns Adam's world upside down. He never imagined his best friend's very proper and exceedingly attractive widow would seek out a lover. If not for his recent betrothal to a young beauty, he would jump at the chance to warm Marianne's bed. Since he cannot bear the thought of another man doing so, he foils her every attempt at seduction.

Until one night of unintended passion changes everything.

"Hern gracefully crafts a tale of friendship and romance between two beautifully matched protagonists that is delectably sexy, delightfully clever, and simply superb." – Booklist

"Funny, fresh, and outrageously original, this lively, Regency-set historical hooks readers from the start and sweeps them right on to the satisfying conclusion." – Library Journal (starred review)

"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT is a fresh, fun, and fabulous frolic! Only Candice Hern can be both naughty and nice at the same time!" – NY Times Bestselling author Teresa Medeiros

"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT is a sparkling celebration of female friendship that offers a fresh spin on the most beloved themes of romance. It is outrageously sexy fun as only Candice Hern can deliver. Every page is pure satisfaction." -- NY Times Bestselling author Lisa Kleypas

"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT involves a high-spirited Wodehousian house party, and a glimpse into the rarefied Regency society world through the lens of Marianne and Adam's atypical friendship. Hern brings uncommon warmth to her exploration of Marianne's resistance to sacrificing the rest of her life to her husband's memory. It takes considerable courage for her to embrace her new path, and Hern doesn't stint on showing that. An accomplished writer with a sharp eye for character, Hern also possesses a great sense of fun that leaves a smile after the book is finished." – Contra Costa Times

Heartwarming & Start to Great Series!

In the Thrill of the Night is a wonderful start to another sexy and heartwarming romance series. Candice Hern pulls off the complicated relationship between the Marianne and Adam very well. A best friend to David, Adam continues his friendship with David's widow, Marianne, and comes to realize that his deep friendship for Marianne has really been love all along, and Marianne comes to realize that her love for David was really friendship and that Adam is the one to give her the passion and love that she did not have in her marriage to David. The struggle of this realization between Marianne and Adam while passion flames between them keeps the reader captivated. The only criticism is that I longed for even more passion and love scenes between the characters, as Ms. Hern knows how to write wonderful love scenes. I am looking forward to the rest of the series and the other Merry Widows as they find passion and ultimately love.

    An amusing chick lit regency

In 1813 the five wealthy Merry Widows serve as the board of trustees for the Benevolent Widows Fund. Though their late spouses were kind individuals each has vowed to not marry again as they like the freedom death provided them. One of the quintet, Lady Gosworth tells her companions that she spent the winter warmed by a youthful lover. Grace, Beatrice and Marianne are shocked while Wilhelmina just smiles. The ladies agree to consider lovers and to continue to support one another regardless.---- Marianne turns to her late husband¿s best friend Adam Cazenove, a noted rake, for guidance. He detests the thought of Marianne with a lover though he rationalizes that the memory of David may be why he rejects the idea. She persuades him to go over her list of possible candidates, but he finds a reason to eliminate most those he cannot cross off in good conscience he plans to stop any tryst from happening. If anyone is going to sleep with Marianne it will be him though he is betrothed to Clarissa Leighton-Blair and he fears he is not the man that David was.----- IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT is an amusing chick lit regency due to the wild antics of the lead male. Though Adam is engaged and rejects the notion of twenty-nine years old Marianne remaining celibate the rest of her life (he assumes marriage one day), he cannot tolerate any of those pretenders sleeping with her so he performs humorous intercessions to prevent the men from doing so. Fans will enjoy his zany escapades as he eventually realizes that he loves Marianne, but doubts she reciprocates because he assumes David filled her soul.---- Harriet Klausner

The Merry Widows made a pact that they would take lovers, but retain their independence and never remarry. The first to take a lover is Marianne. She decides to tell her best friend Adam of her plan, for she needs his help. You see, she has never been with anyone other than her husband and that was an arranged marriage at a very young age. Adam pays lip service to helping her but is secretly sabotaging her efforts. Mainly because, he has only now realized his attraction to Marianne.

This was a sweet novel of love and realization of love that left me wanting more. Always a good start for a series.

    Cute, fun, read

A sweet regency story about two lost people. One dealing w/the death of a husband and the other the best friend of that husband.
Has a lot of fun characters giving "advice" that makes this a quick read that you find yourself smiling most of the time.
