Children's Literature
"Art Around the World" is a British series, which has also covered the Renaissance, Impressionism, and contemporary art. This particular book uses Picasso as a focal point for investigating the foundations of modern art. It's a quick trip through the Fauves, the Vienna Secession, Cubism, Die Brcke, the Futuristsand all the way up to Klee, Matisse, and Picasso himself. It's a useful beginning survey with backmatter including a chronology, a glossary, and an index. Sidebars on the influence of art from other world cultures (African masks vis-a-vis Picasso, for example) are useful, as is the author's occasional commentary on social events which influenced such artists as George Grosz. Picture choices and reproduction are also quite good. Not a bad starting point for the budding art historian. 2002, Copper Beech,
