Overview

Here is the ideal introduction for preschoolers and early elementary children to insects that are not only amazing but also critically important to humans.

Inside the hive views of a wild colony of honey bees offer close ups of the queen, the cells, even bee eggs. Simple verse will engage a young child, while sidebars with fascinating information satisfy the somewhat older child. Parents, teachers, and kids will love this picture book. The detailed art shimmers with life, highlighting each hair or grain of pollen on the bees. A wild hive in a tree in her own backyard served as a model for the artist!

Backmatter includes:

  • further information about wild and domestic hives.
  • information on how to learn more about honey bees.

About the Author

Lori Mortensen has always liked honeybees—she just wasn't sure they liked her. If a honeybee flew around her head when she was a child, she jumped up and ran away. Today, Lori is a multi-published children's author who enjoys writing fiction and nonfiction on all sorts of subjects—including honeybees! When she's not plunking away at the keyboard on her latest project, she's watching the wildlife that live near her family's home in the foothills of Northern California. Deer, wild turkeys, red-tailed hawks, and Canadian geese are just a few of the regular visitors. To learn more about Lori and her books, visit her website at www.lorimortensen.com.

Cris Arbo's art is known for intense detail and is inspired by her love and respect for nature. It has appeared in books, magazines, calendars, cards, murals, and in animated feature films, TV shows, and commercials. She has illustrated six nature awareness children's books for Dawn Publications and is also a frequent presenter at schools and conferences. Cris has four daughters and lives in Buckingham, Virginia with her husband, author Joseph Anthony and their youngest daughter, Alina. Many of Cris' favorite hours are spent in the garden.
