Story of the Year sounded way too clean on their debut for Maverick, 2003's Page Avenue. You could tell there was a heavy sound behind the emo overtones and Goldfinger impresario John Feldmann's sugary mix and production, but good luck finding it. The St Louis quintet was lost inside a formula. But the band more than remedies that with 2005's In the Wake of Determination, a rewardingly heavy record that still keeps things accessible enough for fans of Page Avenue's overdone power ballad "Anthem of Our Dying Day." Producer Steve Evetts (Hatebreed, Dillinger Escape Plan) brings out the hardness without shutting down Story's melodic sensibilities -- in a song like opener "We Don't Care Anymore," glowering riffs meet soaring choruses and even some keyboard for just the right balance of darkness and light. The similarly strong "Take Me Back" is saved from Hoobastank territory by its modified hardcore rhythms. Hardcore actually figures into most of Determination, fueling "Our Time Is Now," "Stereo," and the triumphant chorus of "March of the Dead." There are hundreds of bands in the mid-2000s who blatantly slam hardcore into metal and other elements. Story of the Year do, too -- they counteract their yelling and anthem-making with layered harmonies that still sound too sweet, and there are parts lifted from old Maiden and Metallica records. But Story of the Year aren't rocking a formula. And even if they are, In the Wake of Determination still sounds like exactly the record they wanted to make, so it doesn't really matter. It's clear that this time around, they believe in it. [The album was also issued in a clean version.]

this album was just about as good as their first, and their first was really good. SOTY does a great job combining their great guitars with dan's voice...sick album. the songs i liked were: our time is now, taste the poison, five against the world, and the last song on the album (not the hidden song) that song might have the best opening guitar riff ever

I was waiting for their new cd what seemed like forever. I would listen to their old CD to prepare for this one. Now I can't even compare the new songs to the old ones because the new ones are simply more amazing. It's not like the old ones suck, it's just that Story of the Year has gotten so much better. If you want to buy this CD, definitely buy it. It'll knock your head off. This CD is probably better than your whole CD collection. Go out and buy this CD now, or else someone will shoot you.

Page Ave, Story of the Years first album was an amazing CD with very good songs on it. If you loved Page Ave, you will absolutely love In The Wake Of Determination. It is a lot more hard rock then Page Ave, and I think their sound has changed just enough so that it's not an exact copy of the way they sounded on their first CD. With great songs such as Taste The Poison, "Is This My Fate," He Asked Him and Wake Up The Voiceless this is definately a CD you will keep in your CD player for a long time.

Story of the year pulled off another killer albums, with cd is harder than page avenue in every part of the music and lyrics. The guitar solos are awesome, everything fits. The guys really showed off their talent is this heavy rock masterpiece. This album is a must buy. Its heavy like on "is this my fate, he asked them" in the middle on songs like "stero" and "our time is now" and lighter and poppier like page avenue on "take me back" buy this album.

Story of the Year's sophomore album, In The Wake of Determination is brilliant. It's refreshing to see a pop-punk band break from the mold and do something so much heavier and with so much more meaning behind the songs than the normal sappy breakup song. They're definitely outstanding the sophomore album curse. I would reccommend this album to anyone who likes heavy music that has meaning to it. I'd also reccommend that you buy two copies for when you wear out the first one.

After Story of the Year's debut album, I thought there was no way that the band could follow up with a sophomore collection anywhere that could match the feel of Page Avenue. But, they did it and I dont know how. It's a little more hardcore than Page Avenue, so it attracts more fans of those who like Disturbed, and The Used, while it keeps the faithful fans happy also. A MUST BUY! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

The band Story of the Year has created a voice that is annoying, especially We Don't Care Anymore. This band is horrible like Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance, and 10 Years. All the songs are horrible and the way they play is not rock. In other words I wasted my money, I've wasted my hate, and my time. So this album and the band it stink, it stinks, it stinks, it stink, it stinks, it stinks, it stinks, it stink, it stinks, it stinks, it stinks, it stink, it stinks, and did I mention IT STINKS!
