Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These are volumes 1 (1928) and 2 (1929) of the Nobel prize-winning Undset's "The Master of Hestviken" series. Set in medieval Norway, the books follow Olav and Ingunn, who, though raised as brother and sister, have become lovers in a world caught between the fading sphere of pagan worship and vendettas and the expansion of Christianity. Volumes 3 and 4 will be released in July.

    I Also Recommend:

Beautiful and painful story great historical fiction

The Master of Hestviken series follows a bit the typical Sigrid Unset style. The characters are real and endure many hardships seeking redemption. The setting is Medieval Norway. The pain the characters endure often is a result of their own poor choices and misunderstanding. This is the second book in the series and picks up where The Axe leaves off. In this series Olav Audunnson is the primary protagonist. He make many mistakes and some especially poor choices, but through it all is not a bad man but definitely lost. This series is a story of soul searching, of a soul in turmoil struggling and seeking redemption. It paints a picture of Christianity in medieval times, Sigrid Unset manages to tell a story that is relevant to today and the searching that man in general goes through. I love historical fiction and loved this series.
