Introduction

In this information age, teenagers-and the rest of us-have more access to more information more quickly than anyone in human history. But this generation of young people is perhaps the most biblically illiterate since the invention of the printing press.

Why? Is it because today's teenagers are incapable of learning about the Bible? Of course not! Because they don't have access to Bibles to read for themselves? No way! They don't have access to tools to help them study the Bible? On the contrary! The problem is that teenagers, like everyone else, need to be taught how to study, understand, and apply the Bible.

Too often youth ministry is about our words rather than God's Word. We tell young people what God says instead of letting them discover God's truth for themselves. If we want students to know, own, and love God's Word, we must teach them why the Bible is powerful and how to experience that power in their own lives.

This kit will help you do just that. In the Word is a basic introduction to the Bible and how to study it, consisting of four Bible study sessions and a project:

Study 1: The Ultimate Travel Guide will teach your students where the Bible came from and why we should study it.

Study 2: Learning to Navigate will equip your teenagers with a simple Bible study method that will help them understand what they read.

Study 3: Equipped for Adventure will give young people a basic overview of some Bible study tools they can use to better comprehend God's Word.

Study 4: Hitting the Trail will help students focus on application, making sure they do more than read the Bible by encouraging them to apply it to their lives and act on what they learn.

Bible Study Project: Extreme Adventure gives teenagers a chance to put into motion what they learn in the four Bible study sessions, completing specific Bible study projects and teaching one another what they learn.

As you prepare to use this kit, don't forget you'll need a copy of the In the Word Journal for each person in your group. Each participant will use this journal during the Bible study sessions and the Bible study project. And outside your meeting times, this student journal will help teenagers make Bible study a lifelong habit.

Go ahead and get your teenagers into God's Word. Inspire them with this exciting adventure. Start them on the journey by teaching them how to welcome God's truth into their lives-and see what happens!
