Overview

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." Nelson Mandela spoke these words from the dock at the Rivonia Treason Trial on April 20, 1964. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." Nelson Mandela spoke these words from the dock at the Rivonia Treason Trial on April 20, 1964. Through his words and actions ever since, Mandela has been embraced worldwide as a symbol of courage, hope, and reconciliation.

South African journalist Jennifer Crwys-Williams has compiled a collection of Mandela's observations, culled from a variety of sources. In the Words of Nelson Mandela presents his thoughts on subjects as diverse as humanity, friendship, oppression, and freedom. These quotations provide valuable insight into the man and all he stands for. By turns moving, revealing, humorous, and wise, Mandela's words eloquently convey his warmth and dignity; his thoughts, though brief, contain enormous depth-"One minute can change the world," for example-and are certain to inspire and give strength to all who read them.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This brief book is a collection of quotes from one of the great political, social, and humanitarian figures in history. With his brilliant mind and eloquent way of speaking, Mandela has certainly provided a wealth of material for a project such as this. Unfortunately, his insight is not done justice. South African radio host Crwys-Williams organizes the quotes alphabetically by subject, i.e., "On Goals," followed by "On the Future." Most quotes are just one sentence long, many fewer than twenty words. These snippets sometimes lose their poignancy when taken out of context and feel contrived to fit into a particular category. In the "On Love" section, for instance, readers will find "I'm in love with a remarkable lady. She has changed my life," with the commentary following running longer than the quote itself. Other categorizations are downright odd: "Men must follow the dictates of their conscience irrespective of the consequences which might overtake them for it" is the sole member of the unlikely category called "On Men." Where this book does succeed is in making the reader want to go straight to the source, and look up Mandela's great speeches—un-excerpted. (May)

    R.I.P

Rest in peace my dear friend. The nation will be grieving, but yet celabrating your life and what you did for us. You shall never be forgotten, nor your legacy. You will always be in my thoughts. I say my final goodbye, to the one who fought to end slavery. Rest in peace. God bless you for coming into our lives. May the nation never forget you. Now, you are in heaven, where there is no sadness, no pain, just love and kindness. What you said to end slavery, it will be never forgotten. Your life here on earth wad a blessing to all of us. Rest in peace, we will miss you. <3

    Poorly edited

The book provides numerous quotes from Mandela, but they all seem excessively truncated. Consequently, the flow of Mandela's thoughts are greatly mangled. I also found any lead in or explanatory sentences, from the editor, to be generally abrupt. Lastly, the work is overly brief. There are quite a number of excellent speeches, letters and narratives that Mandela produced. The book could have provided complete texts or even substantial excerts from any number of the sources, but again and again it fails to allow Mandela's wonderful vision of the best we can be to be properly expressed. I was not at all happy with the editorial efforts reflected in this book. I would not recommend it.

    Incomplete

This book does not fully incorporate all of Mandela's political relations nor does it fully illuminate his ties to Communist dictators.
