Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Cynthia L. Blinn
Developed from the authors' more than seven years of work with adolescent survivors of sexual abuse at the Germaine Lawrence School in Arlington, Massachusetts, this workbook is exceptionally well written. Both licensed independent clinical social workers, Munson and Riskin's awareness of and respect for girls' experiences, emotions, and difficulties with regard to sexual abuse makes this an extremely valuable adjunct to individual and/or group therapy. Survivors may use the workbook in a variety of ways-contracting with themselves and their therapists to keep focused, adjusting contracts as necessary for comfort or therapeutic progress-and are encouraged to work at their own pace and in their own styles. From the clear, hopeful preface and introduction, through definitions and vocabulary necessary for girls to discuss abuse and identify their feelings, to the final chapter, "Taking Charge of Your Life," the authors accompany girls and guide them through extremely arduous, unsettling waters. Each of ten chapters includes quotes from survivors and a "Take a Break: Check In with Yourself" section, and concludes with suggested activities that involve various forms of artistic/emotional expression. Two minor technical lapses barred a A powerful tool for survivors and therapists, one that all adults who encounter abuse survivors ought to read. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

    Good

It's a helpful book, I read through it abit and it looks pretty good, I would recommend it for teenage girls who are survivors of sexual abuse and maybe professionals who could have their young clients use them. The book might be helpful along with therapy, if you are more private you could answer the questions on your computer or in a seperate notebook, this might be a helpful tip.

    Very Helpful

This book is a godsend for counselors working with young girls. Preteens benefit from this as well. The chapter on flooding and freezing is confusing to young girls and perhaps unnecessary, and the chapter on why it is not their fault ought to be used first. However, the workbook leaves with some hope and assertiveness as well as an understanding of how past sexual abuse affects behavior, thoughts, and feelings in the here and now.
