In This Night

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
Although Bob Franke embraces Christian ideology -- the singer/songwriter almost became an Episcopal minister -- he isn't one to beat listeners over the head with it. Some of his lyrics underscore his Christian beliefs, but he isn't preachy or in your face about it. In fact, the impressive thing about Bob Franke is his ability to use Christian themes and imagery to send out a universal message, which is what he often does on In This Night. You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate this reflective, contemplative CD; the spiritual concerns that Franke addresses on "Holy Ground" and "Thanksgiving Eve" aren't unique to Christianity, and one who embraces Judaism, Islam, ...

You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate this reflective, contemplative CD; the spiritual concerns that Franke addresses on "Holy Ground" and "Thanksgiving Eve" aren't unique to Christianity, and one who embraces Judaism, Islam, or Hinduism could easily relate to Franke's message. In that sense, Franke inspires comparisons to Bono and U2, although he doesn't sound anything like that famous Irish group. And not everything on In This Night has a really deep, serious message. Occasionally, Franke just likes to have fun, which is what he does on the bluesy "I'm a Mainframe, Baby." Using computer terminology and clever double entendres, this number is surprisingly lusty for someone who almost became a minister. But then, Franke never put himself up on a pedestal and claimed to be devoid of human desires. Again, Franke's lyrics are universal, and In This Night is among his most memorable releases.
