Unlike her blonde pop peers Britney and Christina, who've stripped closer to bare with each album, Jessica Simpson has maintained the sexy-yet-virginal image she debuted in 1999 with the saccharine Sweet Kisses. On her third disc, In This Skin, however, Simpson's lyrics have matured, thanks to her recent marriage to longtime beau Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees. Aided by Celine Dion producer Ric Wake, the Dallas native co-wrote most of the disc's 11 songs, and the resulting album is packed with sweet beats, sensual vocals, and an organic vibe not normally found in most contemporary pop recordings. Simpson's newfound confidence reverberates throughout, notably on the self-affirming, Mariah-reminiscent title cut, with its mix of acoustic guitars and airy harmonies, and the Diane Warren–penned "Sweetest Sin," on which Simpson's breathy vocals recall Janet Jackson. While "With You," with its staccato rap beats and subtle strings, and the hip-hop soul-flavored "Loving You" are all about bliss, Simpson maintains her balance with more bittersweet fare. The piano-driven ballad "You Don't Have to Let Go" is a poignant nod to a father letting go of his little girl when she marries, and the equally pained "Underneath" addresses the trials and triumphs of a committed relationship. With In This Skin, Simpson has successfully made the transition from sassy teen phenom to sophisticated pop star.

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Out of all the teen pop thrushes of the late '90s/early 2000s, Jessica Simpson was perhaps the oddest. Not because she was genuinely strange -- especially compared to Christina or Pink -- but because she never seemed that comfortable with the genre. On her debut, Sweet Kisses, that awkwardness could be written off as first-time jitters, particularly because the album boasted the dynamite single "I Think I'm in Love," which is about as perfect as pop gets. On her second album, Irresistible, her awkwardness could be attributed to either the fabled sophomore slump or the fact that she was being tarted up too much, presented as a sexy tease when she's really just the sweet, curvy girl next door. Now, for her third album, In This Skin, she tones down the trashy club beats and image, staying within the contemporary dance-pop realm while inching toward the middle-of-the-road diva that she's always yearned to be. And that's the key to Simpson and her records -- apart from that brief, brilliant moment on "I Think I'm in Love," she's never seemed like she's wanted to sing pop music. She's somebody who would have been much more comfortable in an era where she could have been produced by Mitch Miller, not somebody who half-heartedly sings moderately stylish, overly calculated dance-pop. Simpson is not a bad singer, and only when she's given a show-stopping ballad in the vein of Celine Dion can she really strut her skills. The heart of In This Skin is in the mature middle of the road, while its sound is still pitched young. Simpson is still a sweet, photogenic girl with a good voice, and in her favor, as she gets further removed from her teens, she will be allowed to do more mature material -- and this CD is a tentative step in that direction. [In This Skin was re-released six months later with two additional tracks -- covers of Robbie Williams' "Angels" and Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" -- plus an additional "bonus track" of an acoustic version of "Without You," and a bonus DVD containing 13 minutes of footage from the first season of Newlyweds and her marriage.]

I think that this artist has great potential and has a very good voice. I have been a fan for many years and I believe that her new album will be one of my favorite cd's. She deserves to have a great title for her new cd, which she has.

Jessica ´s new album is about love and between her and her husband Nick Lachey from boyband 98degrees she sings well and sounds exacly the same as Mariah carey does. this album is pretty good and better than her latest album irresisteble.

In This Skin is Jessica´s newest album since 2001 Irresisteble and that album was awesome with pop and heavy ballads full lungpower album while this one sounds so lame there is none good song on this album they all sounds so boring maybe it´s her most personal album she has ever done because she co-writes every track on the album the first version The Sweetest sin is a Diane Warren penned song and Produced by Celine dion´s longtime producer Ric Wake it´s the only song that is nice to listen to for couples in love. Where is your voice Jessica what happened to I Wanna Love You Forever,For Your Love and the great pop songs, you should make a diffirent take next time this album suck it is worse than Mariah carey´s Charmbracelet and even Glitter sounds better, you will never top Mariah Carey or Celine with this comeback album sorry to say this.

She's finally writing her own music so I thought the cd would be good like Christina Aguilera. Too many slow songs, and songs I don't like. The only good song is Sweetest Sin. All the other songs are poorly written and are pointless, I'm really not interested in hearing about sensual songs that have to do about her husband throught out the whole cd. Although she's trying to be more mature, this cd shows that she's trying too hard.

This is a wonderful CD. I am amazed at the talent Jessica continually shows. Everyone can relate to her songs and that makes them so much better. She is truly amazing. For no other reason buy it for the song "I Have Loved You", it is incredible!!

Speaking of months before I couldn't wait for this album .. now , I am very disappointed to see that this album wasn't as the same quality of the previous album which I think is one of the best pop albums ... Not even reaching the quality of the first album ,,, Sorry Jessica , you couldn't make it ..

On this extremely well produced and well written record, Jessica expresses a side of herself that is very honest and unscripted. On her previous records she seemed to play a role of "popstar girl next door" but now steps boldly into the adult world. All of the songs on this record are expectionally good. Her voice in perfect form, Jessica seems to focus on creating an atmosphere around the arrangments...very sensual. Her passion on this record cannot be denied. Favorite songs include Sweetest Sin, and On my way home, love tribute to Nick Lasley. It's obvious that her marriage has effected the maturity of the lyrics. Finally Jessica steps out of Britney shadows!!!

"With You" is a song every teenage girl can relate to. "Sweetest Sin" and "I have Loved You" are great songs showi ng her devotion to her husband. Some songs I had to fast forward through because the beat and lyrics didn't show Jessica's true potential. I would recommend this to any girl over 12.

Jessica Simpson is so talented, and I'm not even a fan. She is no given enough credit for her vocals, which I personally luv, especially With You. And though I think she and Nick should get a room, I luv it, though its not Mariah material.
