Rank completed this work in 1906, but it was published as Das Inzest-Motiv in Dichtung und Sage in 1912 (by Franz Deuticke, Leipzig and Vienna). This translation by Gregory C. Richter (introductory essay by Peter Rudnytsky) makes the work available in English for the first time. Bringing together psychoanalysis and literature, it encompasses the entire progress of Western literature, with discussion of folklore and the mythological traditions of non- Western cultures as well, and provides important insights into the early development of Rank's thinking.
