Children's Literature
It is the last day before summer vacation. The teacher, Mr. Wooden has one more assignment for Inch and Miles. He has written a question on the board, "What is success?" Inch and Miles have some ideas, but Mr. Wooden explains to them success isn't being the most popular or having the best toys. Success is trying 100 percent to be your personal best. Mr. Wooden gives them a whistle to use to meet special friends who will help them understand how to be their personal best. Axelrod Ant tells them to work hard. This is the first block of Mr. Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Other animals tell them that enthusiasm, friendship, loyalty, cooperation, self-control, alertness, action, determination and fitness are all part of the Pyramid of Success. Don't forget team spirit, poise, and confidence. When they make it back to school they are happy to share their enthusiasm with Mr. Wooden. 2003, Perfection Learning, Ages 8 to 12.
—Kristin Harris
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Mr. Wooden the owl gives his two pupils, Inch the inchworm and Miles the mouse, one final assignment before summer vacation-to define success. To put them on the right track, his whistle takes the two students on a magical adventure in which they meet different animals and explore the various components of success. For example, the ant equates it with hard work while, a few pages later, the dog defines it as loyalty. Some of the explanations are a little baffling-the eagle asserts that success requires poise, which means, "be yourself." This hardly explains the concept of poise for children. Except for Inch, Miles, and the narrator, all of the characters speak almost entirely in rhyming couplets, but the rhythm is sometimes off: "The energy and pep you show/will rub off on those you know." The bright cartoon illustrations done in thick oil paint may grab readers' attention, but overall the book will turn off its audience. The pages are extremely text heavy, and the small font is often hard to read on the bright backgrounds. Adult fans may appreciate Coach Wooden's desire to motivate kids, but children themselves will likely find this preachy package uninspiring and a few components short of a success.-Julie Roach, Malden Public Library, MA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Another Outstanding and Inspiring Children's Book

I first read this book to one of my students in the 1st grade class that I student teach in. After reading the first page, I was immediately hooked. At the time, I was worried about an upcoming job interview, but the lovable characters inspired me to be fearless and strive for success. As each of the characters gave tips on how to be successful, I found myself soaking in the knowledge and identifying with each character.

The drawings are so cute and don't have one white spot on each page. As I read to one girl, more and more students came over to listen. This book is clearly great for all ages!

    Great read for children

Great read for all children of a variety of ages, I have had younger - those 11 and 13 read to younger children - 2,4, 6 and 9 and they all seem to learn something for this wonderful book. John Wooden is still teaching the youth even though he has passed away. Great man and we should be wise enough to learn and share from him.
