Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The joy of a simple ski trip depends on the use of inclined planes. What would a skiing adventure be without the hill to ski down? A hill is an example of an inclined plane. Many historians think that Egyptians used inclined planes to move heavy stones when they were building the pyramids. Today, people use inclined planes to board a plane when they use the jet way that runs from the terminal to the plane door. When a person in a wheelchair uses a ramp, he is using an inclined plane. A simple playground slide and a complex roller coaster are examples of inclined planes. This series, titled "First Facts. Simple Machines to the Rescue," presents simple, brief explanations about how things work. Each title contains a hands-on activity that illustrates the principles discussed in the book or gives additional information. The glossary contains all the words that are in bold print throughout the text. An index and suggestions for further reading are included. This publisher maintains a web site, facthound.com, that directs children to resources chosen for age appropriateness. Each selection of resources is identified by typing in the book ID. Resources selected are then specific to age and the subject of the title. This management of resources is particularly helpful for this age group. All titles in this series have the same resource management page, and all titles are recommended for elementary classrooms and media collections.
