The climate crisis may at times appear to be happening slowly, but in fact it is happening very quickly — and has become a true planetary emergency. The Chinese expression for crisis consists of two characters. The first is a symbol for danger; the second is a symbol for opportunity. In order to face down the danger that is stalking the planet and move through it, listeners first have to recognize that they are facing a crisis. So why is it that public leaders seem not to hear such clarion warnings? Are they resisting the truth because they know that the moment they acknowledge it, they will face a moral imperative to act? Is it simply more convenient to ignore the warnings?

Perhaps, but inconvenient truths do not go away just because they are not seen. Indeed, when they are not responded to, their significance doesn't diminish; it grows.

Editorial Reviews

Michiko Kakutani
… as a user-friendly introduction to global warming and a succinct summary of many of the central arguments laid out in those other volumes, An Inconvenient Truth is lucid, harrowing and bluntly effective.

Warren Bass
Al Gore may have missed his calling: He would have made a fine science writer. The former vice president's new book -- a movie tie-in entitled An Inconvenient Truth, like the film hitting screens in New York and Los Angeles this week -- shows an impressive talent for explanatory journalism. Based on a slide show that Gore has been perfecting on his Mac laptop for years, this handsome volume doesn't pack quite the same punch as the celluloid version, but it's still very effective: a book on global warming that's downright chilling.

A perfect example of how has-been politicians and pseudoscience groupies can lie and make money at the same time.

There are so many inaccuracies and self-serving scientific 'facts' in this book that it is impossible to name them all. Suffice it to say that Herr Josef Goebels would have been proud to have endorsed this book. That despicable little Nazi promoted the principle of the Big Lie. Tell a lie loudly enough and long enough and gullible people will begin to believe it. Fretwell's book, The Sky is NOT Falling, should be read by those who want a balanced viewpoint and then let your own judgement take over. We have had recurring cycles of global warming and cooling ever since man has been on this planet and long before that. Our carbon footprint is a negligible factor in these recurring cycles. Gore has a BIG footprint when it is not inserted into his mouth and wastes energy in that big house of his. He justifies this by buying carbon offsets, but he is a bad example for our children to follow. Read both books and compare science with pseudoscience and make up your own mind.

    We can make a diffrence

An Inconvenient Truth is a great book. It explains all about global warming and you can learn a lot from it, I know I have. Al Gore tells just about everything you would need to know about global warming, he also has a counter for everything that makes skeptics think that global warming is not happening or that we as humans have no affect on or that the increase in temperatures are just normal fluxes. An Inconvenient Truth tells how important global warming is and it also tells us that if we do not start to stop global warming soon then it may be too late to stop it at all. One of the coolest things about the book is the part where he talks about how the scientist can read the ice and tell what year the ice was formed. This was a great book and if you have any doubts about global warming READ THIS BOOK! It well change your mind forever.

    More hype than facts!

For those already buying into the mass hysteria of the Global warming agenda, this book preaches to the choir well! And it is remarkably clear and well-written, which is why Gore continues to go from event to event in those gas-guzzlin' SUV's, preaching his "GW gospel" to thousands and thousands.

Already the holes are starting to crack....and in 25 years, people will look back on this book as laughable. Just like we look back on people in the early 1970's who were saying the earth is heading for an "ice age" (or close to it) by the year 2000.

The great thing about time is it shows how bogus some of these claims will prove to be. These people are interested more in power politics and controlling our lives, and they'll use the "poor ole' polar bear" sob stories to the best of their ability to convince us.

Don't buy into the hype...and save your money on a book. Besides....far too many trees had to be cut down to print these books anyhow!!!

    A total fabrication.

This book is void of any scientific data, new data has repuded most of the content. Purely fictional.

    Pointless and Untrue

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! It's easy to construct an agenda-driven book based on nothing more than assumptions and unproven scenarios. Check the weather pattern folks, we are actually in a cooling period. The weatherman can hardly tell whether or not it's going to rain tomorrow, but based on our....what....110 years of weather records we know, without a doubt, that we are the reason for the earth's current climate and that any natural increase in temperature is a product of humans. Yet, records show that the earth has always fluctuated. Even during the industrial revolution, when our output was at one of its highest levels, we were in a cooling period. This book, and the movie, is garbage. There are so many flaws and inconsistencies it is almost humorous. Science has proven that it is wrong 100 times over. To have students watching this is an insult to the (socailist-driven) school system. And, to give Al Gore....who is no more than a puppet that apparently invented the Internet....one of the world's grandest prizes is an insult to anybody that has ever won the Nobel Peace Prize. A slap in the face to winners of the past, present, and future.

Do not buy this book. Do some real research on your own. Educate yourself, and stay away from the KoolAid. Did you know one of the polar ice cap scenes was actually a clip from the movie 'Day After Tomorrow.' This is a joke. It should be taken as such.

    A must read

It's always puzzling to find supposed skeptics who truly do want to accept the scientific fact that global warming is affecting the world and it is going at a must faster rate than it can be anticipated. An Inconvenient Truth is a must read for everyone because this book is not so much a book telling people that the world is going to end but that human impact is causing global warming and that people can make a difference. If people learned more ways to conserve their energy, use less green house gases, and take steps to improve the environment around them, we can still prevent the major disasters that come with the increased global climate change. Everyone should read this book--forget the politics, it's a human issue.

Gore makes a compelling argument. Would have actually been believable if he had left out the politics.

Al Gore Book about Global Warming

This book covers the topic of Global Warming an is very well written by Al Gore. People that might be interested in this kind of book are one people who want to learn about world crisises and also need a good read. The book talks about Global warming and all the effects of it like the ice caps up in Greenland or the North Pole and how all the snow and ice is melting it also covers the ocean rising and the problem of natural disasters like for example the terrible hurrican Katrina which was one of the worst and it happened in New Orleans. Some more stuff that it has is how that we are the ones causing it and we are the only ones that can stop it. A reason that you might be reading it is one like me for schhol or just for fun. It is good for some teachers and it is very eduacatinal and also it has a lot of pictures along with the words that better make people understand the topic. It teaches a good lesson to learn that what we can do to the enviroment is bad and only we can stop it. The last thing that i have to say is that this book is true and this stuff is really happening out there in the world so think what you can do to stop it.

I always wondered who was right on global warming. after reviewing the pictures and reading this book I now see that there is change coming. No matter who or why, I now believe it is changing and changing fast. Very easy and interesting to read. Lots of supporting pictures of before and after.

A response to conservative book reviewers

This book is a great assest to people that dont have the time or attention span to sit down and learn the nuts and bolts about the science behind global warming. This book serves a purpose as a way to get across the dire message that yes, there is something wrong with the planet at this time and hopefully this book will be the starting point for interested people to look further into global warming and see what they can do about it. No, global warming is not disputed (by any scientists, look it up...). There is no disputed published results in any academic journals that argue against global warming. Yes, weather patterns do go through cyclic changes. Unfortunately thats not the point and a great way for uber conservatives to distract from the hard facts and science of it all. The POINT is that there has been no such change in HISTORY that shows such a drastic change in weather patterns and storm severity. I hope that people that bash this book would at least do their homework and look into the science of global warming before using their baseless claim to turn people away from the 'inconvient' truth :' enjoy the book. its a good read and has excellent pictures. do your part and help to save our planet!

A must read for anyone concerned about the environment

This book should be required reading for all college students, no matter what their major, because our generation will be the one to reverse the effects of global warming. A good sized majority of the older generations (my parents included) simply don't care or are in error when they say that global warming doesn't exist. There is too much proof to the contrary. No matter what your personal beliefs are, you cannot deny the existence of global warming, and this book goes well above and beyond its duty in pointing out the facts to prove that it does exist and is definitely a problem.

    Need of the Hour

How long can people run away from the mistakes which human keep making. Nature is not a meek thing, it nows how to keep things in control. All because these companies wanted to make lots of money etc etc, the truth was hidden by the media. There are people still who will swear that there is no global warming. An Inconvenient truth is to open the eyes of such blind folk in the world and urges all of us to start conserving and come together to work to save the earth which we have taken for granted.

    A Must Read

This book offers compelling proof of the effect humans have had on the enviroment. It's informative graphs and data are scientific proof of the phenonmenon. For those out there who believe global warming is just a cycle, READ THIS! Sure, Earth goes through warming and cooling periods, but NOTHING like whats happening now. Although I believe humans have the responsibility to take care of this Earth, I am by no means they type to shove this stuff down your throat. My advice, read a book from both sides of the issue and then decide your views for yourself!! Whatever your interest level is, you must read this book!
