Children's Literature
Fireflies are amazing creatures—they carry a miniature light show to your yard each summer evening. The colorful photos of fireflies in this engrossing picture book will delight young readers. And the text will teach them enough to become "firefly experts" in the neighborhood. For example, fireflies are not flies; they are actually beetles. Their light, which is used to attract a mate, comes from chemicals in their abdomen. Children also learn about the life cycle of a firefly. This title, which is one in the publisher's "Let's Read About Insects" series, is designed to help children gain reading skills as they learn about topics in nature. It would be an asset in both classroom and home libraries. The book's format is child-friendly. Each page spread contains three or four sentences illustrated with a crisp, clear photograph. The photos definitely have a "wow" factor. Although some show the actual size of a firefly, many are enlarged so that the distinct features of a firefly can be observed. Readers will find a glossary, an index, and places to go for additional information at the back of the book. 2004, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 4 to 7.
