Children's Literature
First a comic book character then a TV and movie star, the Hulk has been around for more than forty years. The story of Dr. Banner's metamorphosis is recapped, but the focus is on the Hulk and other characters of great strength. Readers meet most of them in the sidebars of this "DK Reader," Level 4. There is Hercules, The Thing, and lots of contemporary men and women. The text describes body strength, muscle development and how muscles help in our daily lives and work. These descriptions include sports-weightlifting, the shot put, caber tossing, wrestling, football and more. Hulk's abilities are compared to those of ordinary human athletes. His ability to transform is compared to animals such as the puffer fish, butterfly and like certain lizards and sea stars, Hulk heals and regenerates body parts. This early reader is really for those who can't get enough about Hulk. There is a glossary and index. 2003, DK Publishing, Ages 6 to 10.— Marilyn Courtot
