The man in the photograph looked at my naked body with the lust clear in his eyes. And he looked different to before. The angle of his head had changed. The light in his eyes. The expression on his face. The truth of that should have scared me but I was so wound up with desire that I dismissed the implications – I just wanted him to see me, and appreciate me.
And I wanted him to touch me.
I picked up the greatcoat and slung it around my shoulders. I kept my eyes on his, staring deep into his face. I didn't speak – I didn't think he'd understand anything but Russian, anyway. But his eyes seemed to flicker as I wrapped the heavy wool around my naked body.
It was rough against my skin, and I pulled it close. It snaked tighter around me. I half-closed my eyes and let myself absorb the feeling of the embrace about my body.
The room darkened suddenly, and I couldn't make out anything but the lighter square of the window. I couldn't see the photograph, or even my bed. I tipped my head back and it came to rest against a broad shoulder. The coat around me was held there by strong arms. A bristly chin rubbed against my neck.
Hands crept around and plunged below the coat. His palms were cool but not cold; I'd expected a spectral visitation to be clammy or freezing. But my flesh responded willingly to his touch and I leaned back against him.
