Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Quest ("Q") Munoz, 13-year-old amateur magician, and Angela Tucker, 15-year-old Tae Kwon Do expert and amateur spy, have just become step-siblings. It's a good thing they get along, because only days after their folks tie the knot, they are pursued by Israeli (Mossad) spies. Speaking of spies, Angela's mom, who died in the line of duty four years earlier, was one of the best... or was she? Boone, the roadie/spy looking after them, tells Angela there is a 50/50 chance her mom is still alive! The plot thickens when they learn that Angela's mom had (has?) an identical twin who may (or may not) be terrorists! What's a girl to do? If it's Angela, the answer is risk her (and her stepbrother's) life to find the truth. To give away more would be criminal. This one is a humdinger! As with Jack's Run and Zach's Lie, Roland Smith has created an exciting page-turner, but he's outdone himself this time. Angela and Q make a terrific team, each using her and his respective talents in clever ways. First-person narrator Q also has a wonderful, dry sense of humor: "‘I think I'm walking through a dead zone,' I said, hoping I wasn't being literal." This first entry in the cleverly named "I, Q" series leads right into the sequel. Let's hope it comes out soon. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
School Library Journal

Gr 5-8

When Quest (Q for short) Munoz's songwriting mom marries rock star Roger Tucker, he and new stepsister Angela join the sensational duo on the road for a national concert tour. Life on the bus goes from boring to bedlam as an old roadie named Boone and his dog, Croc, come aboard, and Dirk Peski, an appropriately named paparazzo, stalks their every move. Boone's preoccupation with the teens' safety and whereabouts and Angela's suspicions about being followed lead her to tell Q about her dead mother's connection to the Secret Service. Alternating chapters of italicized dialogue between a mystery man named Eban Lavi and an international cast of shady characters alert readers that this parallel action will somehow impact Q and Angela when they reach Philadelphia, the city where Angela's mother was killed in the line of duty. Speculation that she may have survived and become a terrorist fuels Angela's determination to find the truth. The pair uses natural tech savvy and Q's magician tricks to elude their followers and comb the city for clues. Preoccupied adults and bumbling spies provide a convenient plot contrivance for the sleuthing teens, but sheer numbers of extraneous characters muddle the story. The best-developed character, Boone, steals the show as the paternal, James Bond-loving intelligence officer whose crime-solving dog is a sidekick. Action lovers will find just enough substance to keep them coming back for future episodes.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY

Kirkus Reviews
Thirteen-year-old "Q," or Quest, is at a life-changing moment. His singer-songwriter mother, Blaze, is marrying Roger, and together they have a hit album. The rocker couple plans a cross-country tour with the kids. A year out of school with only an online tutor leaves plenty of time for Q to practice his magic tricks and to get to know his new 15-year-old stepsister, Angela. The tour bus stops in Philadelphia, the parents exit to do their show-and Angela confides to Q that she believes they are being followed. With the help of Boone, a former roadie (and retired spook) who is now in charge of the kids, they realize that Angela is in danger: Her mother, a CIA agent believed to have perished in a terrorist attack, may still be alive. A blend of adventure, suspense, intelligently imagined characters and terrific authorial sleight-of-hand (not to mention Q's own card tricks) will keep readers engaged as the kids solve the mystery in this series opener. An interactive website is scheduled to launch with the book's release. (Fiction. 10-14)

    BOOK REVEIW OF I,Q

I absolutely loved the book I,Q. This story has a way of grabbing the reader's attention and keeps them reading on with the anticipation of what is going to happen next. When two step siblings, Quest and Angela, realize their being followed, they get tangled into a problem they never thought they would be a part of. Later Quest learns about the secrets of Angela's mother Malak, who was a former Secret Service agent and was supposedly killed by a terrorist bomb. The race of Angela, Quest, and the SOS agianst the Mossad leads to a suspensful and heart pounding adventure for the truth of what really happened to the memorable agent, Malak.

Excellent Read!-slow start, short ending. But definitely worth it!

I decided to read this book after I read the Hunger Games series. I was told that this book was good from another person that read, and loved, the Hunger Games series. The main character Quest (a.k.a. IQ) is the son of Blaze Munoz, a female musician now married to his stepfather Roger Turner. Roger's previous wife, Malak Turner, who is now dead, was a secret service agent for the C.I.A. I like Quest because he shares many characteristics with Katniss, the main character from the Hunger Games. First, he did what was best for his mother (supporting her marriage to Roger) similar to Katniss taking the position of her sister. Quest and Katniss both accept the call to adventure in their lives. Both books start out similar. They take a little time to get started. If you like a book that gets into the story right away, this book is not the book for you. It takes some time to get into it and at the beginning, its hard to even know what the story is going to be about, but about 1/4 or more of the way through the book it begins to become really addictive and good. I liked this book because it is told by the main character, so it is through his point of view, like the Hunger Games. Until about 1/4 of the way through the book, there are two different stories being told. The author makes clear sense of this by using italics for one party, while Quest's party and point of view is the normal text. I started to question if I was going to finish this book because of its slow start, but if you like a suspenseful,hard-to-put-down book (like the Hunger Games) it's a great book for you. One thing I didn't care for in this book was the tight and short ending. I was suprised that the beginning of the book took up most of the story. From the point where the two parties meet up and the story starts setting up is less of the book than the beginning. I thought that the begining could, and should, have been shorter. The beginning was boring and in the end, most of the stuff that took place doesn't even matter. The ending could have had more scenes and suspense take place than it did. I was a little bugged about how fast the ending was moving, and I think the author could have talked about a few more characters than he did. As I was reading, I couldn't believe how far I was into the book as it was starting to set up. But none the less, the ending is very well done by Roland Smith, as well as the story. The story was a very intriguing concept, and I haven't heard of any other books that have a story that touched this subject. The ending of this text leads up to the next book quite well, and I am looking forward to reading the second book of this series by Roland Smith. I am now a fan of two series: The Hunger Games, and now I,Q.

    I,Q Independence Hall

This book is extremely fast pace, exciting, and fantastic. I sat down to read this book, and I didn't get up until I'd finished it. While the writing isn't exactly difficult or high class, the adventure is very real. On the character's journey through some life or death situations, used book stores, and burger joints, I decided that this was a wonderful book, even if it isn't what I usually read. I think that anyone could get caught into the excitement of this book, and it's whirlwind pace. It is full of conspiracy theories, international spy organizations, and mistaken identity. I highly recommend this book and its sequel, I,Q The White House.

Why am i not surprised that this book is amazing? Well duh, Roland Smith wrote it!

This book was awing and it really gave a feel as to who the characters are and what is important to them. The author, Roland Smith is very good at perspective and using modern language. He remains to be one of my favorite authors. He is one of those people who can write all types of different things, like Zachs lie, and Jacks run, and Cryptid Hunters are all VERY different, but no matter what is thrown at him, he can bat 1000. This book was very interesting because of the inside knowledge he had about what was going on and the great details. It makes me think, if he is like some of the characters! The characterization was great when it came to Angela, she was probably my favorite but most despised character. Its confusing, but when she has her annoying moments, they can be hated. But her character is also really cool and interesting. I love this book! Highly reccommended!
