School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 5-8-Using major historical landmarks as their destinations, these books use events, people, and dates to transport readers to various points in America's past. The Alamo's relevance to Texas's history is outlined with a time line of the actual siege and highlighted with references to many of the important players, including David Crockett and Jim Bowie. Williamsburg and Independence Park are each described with an emphasis placed upon points of interest that could be visited both virtually and in real life. The strength of these titles is in the inclusion of Web sites that have been evaluated by the publisher and deemed safe and appropriate for student use, although a few of them have advertisements. Using links and passwords identified in the books, students are encouraged to employ these sites as additional sources of information. The inclusion of photographs and illustrations of some of the sites adds to the overall experience of the field trip, but the compact format of the books makes them sometimes seem a bit crowded. Strong additions to history collections.-Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
