Yet as well as its spectacular mountains, pristine coastline and stunning scenery, New Zealand offers vibrant cities, outgoing and self-confident people and the fascinating culture of the Maoris.

This compact alpine resort has a stunning setting at the edge of luminous Lake Wakatipu, the serrated peaks of the Southern Alps rising in the distance. There are excellent skiing facilities here and Queenstown is also a good touring base for exploring Fiordland and Central Otago. What's more, it's on the go more or less 24 hours a day. If you're not shattered after a day on the slopes, sailing the lakes, rock climbing, bungy jumping, jet-boating or river rafting, you can dance the night away in one of the town's many nightclubs. It's no surprise that the locals claim that Queenstown is the 'Adventure Capital of the World'.
