Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The artists covered here may not be well known to fans of Hollywood blockbusters, but discerning moviegoers as well as film students will appreciate Lyons's readable and intelligent survey of today's most acclaimed independent filmmakers. His book is a Who's Who of the hottest names in the field: David Lynch, Spike Lee, David Cronenberg, Julie Dash, Gus Van Sant, Abel Ferrara, John Singleton, and others just coming to prominence. Lyons surveys the films of each artist, providing background information on their lives and careers and in some cases quoting from his interviews with them. Among the 50-odd filmmakers featured are many who are difficult to find in standard reference sources. As a group, they represent a wide variety of cultural perspectives: African American, female, and gay filmmakers are all well represented. Some of these names may not stand the test of time, but for now Lyons's book is valuable and timely. Worth considering for both academic and public libraries.-- David C. Tucker, DeKalb Cty.
