Overview

The Indestructible Beat of Soweto is one of the most powerful albums ever released, an impossibly intense album of proud, even joyous, music created amid the most oppressive circumstances. In fact, considering the conditions that created it-forced migration, hellish poverty, the absolute deprivation of cultural identity-the South African 'mabaqanga,' compiled here is nothing short of a miracle. Rooted in the gospel-like a cappella singing style known as mbube and the swing-jazzy marabi, this Zulu-sung township soul is rhythmically tough, melodically buoyant, and vocally deep -- really deep-deeper than the diamond minds Ladysmith Black Mambazo sing of with tear-wrenching beauty on their album-closing hymn. Featuring the massive "groaner" Mahlathini and some of the most feverishly intense guitar interplay and rhythmic drive ever laid to wax, The Indestructible Beat of Soweto is as fierce and frantic as it is lovely. A decade after it effectively introduced the West to the concept "Afropop," it remains the best record to fall under that heading, and one of the ten most satisfying records of all time.
