The "Countries in the News" series grazes trouble spots of the world, selecting basic information about history, politics, culture, and current events. Each title includes statistics and brief discussions of both continuing problems and issues in the news, while offering students several prompts for further debate in the classroom. India will acquaint readers with the country's ancient past and the Mughal Empire, the British Raj, the struggle for independence symbolized by Mahatma Gandhi, and political parties today (the Congress Party and the Indian People's Party). India's diverse religions—Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Jain—are discussed, as are the huge gap between rich and poor, India's expertise in technology, and degradation of the environment. "Know Your Facts" sidebars present information on subjects like "Bollywood" films, Kashmir, nuclear weapons, and the frequent mistreatment of brides in a husband's family. Among questions proposed for student debate are—child marriages, widespread corruption in government, and a new dam complex that will displace a million villagers. Though barely skimmed here, India's problems are troubling, especially its ever-expanding population and the desperate plight of India's poor children; some suggested remedies for the future include providing clean water, electricity, and phones for the poor, assisting poor children to stay in school, and settling tensions between India and Pakistan. Eye-opening information and color photos in this volume could inspire the further research necessary for an in-depth study of India. Gr 4-6-In a brief introduction, Ganeri and Wright cover the nation's flag, languages, monetary system, and major attractions, allotting one paragraph per topic. Lifestyles, putting on a sari, sports and leisure, religions, festivals, transportation, arts and crafts, and history are all treated on double-page spreads. The section on food and drink is followed by a recipe for potato and cauliflower curry. Students wanting a book for reports will find scant information here. However, they will find directions on how to tie-dye a scarf, how to play a game similar to ``Concentration,'' and how to make a shadow-puppet theater. Unremarkable full-color cartoons and small photographs illustrate the text. This title supplements other more standard works such as Sylvia McNair's India (Childrens, 1990), Prodeepta Das's India (Watts, 1990), and India in Pictures (Lerner, 1989).-Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

This title opens with an introduction to India, facts about the land and landscape, the diversity of its food, and the factors that have influenced it. A map shows the many regions of the country. The history of Indian food is addressed in chapters that include the Indus Valley sites (their granaries and what is known of the crops grown at that time), the foods in the hymns and Ayurvedic texts of Vedic India, and later historical interactions with Mogul invaders and European traders. The Spice Trade and the British Raj are introduced here. In the contemporary realm, Ganeri writes about climate and weather, farming and crops, culture and etiquette, the relationships between food and religion, festivals, regional variations, and finally the spread of Indian cuisine to other parts of the world. Sidebars include additional information on a range of subjects such as curry, street food, garam masala, ritual fasting, and types of Indian breads. Back matter includes a glossary, a list of books and Web sites, and an index.
