4500 years of conquest, struggle and triumph in India

Massive 4500-year-old cities, waves of invaders from Persia and Mongolia, assimilation of the conquerers, are all part of this violent story of India. Some of the leaders were born to fulfill their destinies, others rose against impossible odds to found great dynasties. Each time history pivots on the power of an individual or some corresponding fatal weakness, the who, what, how, when and why is given in entertaining and rich detail. The lives of Nehru, the Gandhis, and Jinnah; the interplay of religions and castes and massacres; the birth of India and Pakistan; the time of the British Raj; the vast riches of the Indian Princes; the Mughal Empire--are woven into a seamless narrative. There is much to learn in these pages, especially for one, like me, who is on the way to India.
