A romantic compilation of poetry, Indian Summer takes you on a journey of the imaginary discovery of life's pilgrimage. In this collection of love chronicles, poet Evan Quitelle has included works derived from his life's journey-growing up without a father, the death of his grandmother, falling in love, and raising his son.

Chapter One

Pedestal

There is no high ranking position held greater than to be held in the position of love

The Cloud Just Before Nine

I showed her a photograph

of my future

and in it we shared a double straw single glass float and we did

Uneven Pavement

Like the liberty bell so went my heart no longer flawless and in need of repair a mountain in my path does not unbalance me as much as a pebble in my shoe or the bitter end of you

Echo

Once she told me she loved me I wish it had been in a room with an echo

Commitment

I am afraid of everything but at the place where the ducks gather to feed she touched the caterpillar the daddy long leg and my heart

Things We Lost In the Fire

the fresh smell of linen a candles wick the image in the mirror food for the soul the winding staircase that led up past the crown molding the draft in the finished room over the garage the echo in the bathroom the shadow cast by the lamp shade the clock on the wall leaves from the lemon tree the closet full of skeletons dirty laundry the end of the rope a hand basket window pain the penny for your thoughts the foundation that was laid borrowed wings the tie that binds thecloud just before nine a brown paper bag the juices of a nectarine stage left and plan b the light switch the step ladder for the people at the bottom a sealed envelope the four posts of the bed hindsight and first impression directions to paradise control of the thermostat cool, innocence, chastity, fidelity, celibacy, sanity virginity and ourselves all got lost ...

Listen

I can hear fingerprints on the soul a broken heart mend the wind whisper I hear you

I can hear a prayer answered life come into existence the moon rise I hear you

I can hear the curve of hips the arch of a back sugary pheromones I hear you

I can hear the color blue the world on mute the light come on I hear you

I can hear darkness approach things unravel the coming of age I hear you

I can hear a lily bloom a butterfly in flight a feather falling I hear you

Beauty is not invisible acknowledging love's existence relevance has thy words I hear you

Inclement Weather

A sensual storm She has released me In a wake of content Does it belong to my heart A torrential feeling That has no end Taken for granted Becoming complacent My head enjoys the cleft Of her bosom And I hear the thunder Disguised As hunger pains Weathered But is there a thirst Perhaps for more Maybe for more I wish I could Read her mind I wish I had three wishes If I was the best ever I'd give that gift to her I want to kiss her In the middle And love through Inclement weather

English 317

She smelled like apples and sunshine Her hair was twists of diamonds intertwined with butterflies She was adorned in garments of purple and lime Down I slid into the empty seat next to her Unbeknownst to me I had become her student

I was unaware of the imprints that were being left upon my heart She was science and I naïve She was anatomy and I was aroused As she peered through glasses, her eyes were persuasion She was a queen and I had become her jurisdiction

Her golden skin gently brushed the hairs of my monochromatic world And my soul began to sing She was the eloquent language of love A teaspoon full of passion She was riches and I poverty of heart

I was a synthetic shadow and she was traces of a smile She was escape, she held the Qui She was the vision of a miracle virtuous and divine She was religion and I I was blessed

Apartment 3-C

Ajar, I could see the glow come from within. I had walked this path many times before. Too shy to enter! I peered in. The beauty astonished me. I was mesmerized, drawn in. I entered. What I found was not only beauty but also, an angelic work of art! It was like heaven. Was this heaven here in 3-C?

My sense of smell played host to the sweetest pheromones. I liked what I found. Welcomed with shelter and strength! I did not want to leave! I wanted to converse, but my tongue was stilled. My every thought had already been conveyed. Our minds began to dance rhythmically and it was as if I had become one with 3-C.

I felt inspired. Inspired like no man has ever been before! It was as if my soul had been awakened from slumber. My heart had been held by the gentlest of hands and had been caressed. I gazed into the eyes before me and saw a garden. In this garden, in those eyes flourished wisdom! Like a flower passion sprung forth. Had I found Eden right here in 3-C!

Soothing raindrops bathed my body. I was filled with ecstasy. The sweetest sound kissed my ears. A gentle and soft voice, like a song of love, pierced my soul. I wanted to hear more of the wisdom and intellect that rolled from those lips. I could sit and watch and listen forever and I was content with the Goddess before me in 3-C.

Through God's Eyes

As I knelt in the garden of Eden I began to shed a tear for tomorrow sure today of my feelings for tomorrow unsure about tomorrow's day after an angel in descent from Heaven plucked the lily that had captured my gaze and ascended above no longer to be looked upon leaving the two of us alone realization and myself the realization that after having shared herself in all of her beauty with me I did not share all of myself with the lily hindsight had I known we had no tomorrow I would have been water to her soul sunshine I would have picked her from the garden to be mine I would have told her of the long day in summer when she began to bloom I would have become a butterfly took flight across the white sands by way of Philadelphia to settle upon thee floating in the pit of her stomach like new love unlike the city told her of my wish to be nostalgia like song how I could be content being poetry how I enjoyed our time together listening to the wind whispering the sound of my name even though she was the perfect flower I would tell of all my imperfections and hope that she could see me through God's eyes

I shed a tear because I did not have a chance to share with her that I longed to be the perfect husband the perfect uncle the perfect son the perfect brother the perfect friend even though I may have fell short my intentions were to be the perfect father with no imperfections of tomorrow I would want her to know that I could be perfectly in love with her.

The Contents of My Halo

I drew a circle and in it put a piece of Wood a Jacquet in shades of fuscia and lime Bernard the saint complete and Serene

a gander a gander double took a union and two geese my uplift and drag four in formation for wisdom information the befitting merger my esteemed sect

my diamond ring my sounding block a pink and green refuge of inspiration and calm

Indian Summer

My father fell asleep when I was three I fell in love twenty years later I have been a sailor traversing the ocean not walking on water but possessing the power to charm the sea my heart has been touched by a sapphire breeze my lips kissed by a gentle rain held hands with a Peruvian lily born during a January thaw a love that blooms in mid-October she keeps me warm during the winter solstice and I shine like the prodigal sun

Lavender

she is a chance meeting at cross creek the sweet smell of rain in the air wisdom that rolls from the tongue a shade tree with roots so deep strategically placed kisses the petals of a rose dancing with a summer breeze

she is a caterpillar's aspirations the sand by the water's edge the opposite side of the pillow a wink from across the room a taste of chocolate sexy's definition soft as Egyptian cotton

she is an umbrella's position the aroma of a smile a piece of peace the morning after the joy of a merry go round words that journey across the page a tear drop suspended in mid air

she is a firefly distraction January's seduction blue lust and sugar the top of the mountain

screaming it to the world a lighter shade of purple and still just as deep

and I well I I just want to bathe forever in her lavender

Pacified

As I walk through the garden am I truly happy or just pacified pain has withered joy is in bloom drops of purple fall from the sky nourishment for joy mimicking a bird's song composing my own God is my refuge cedar nothing more if a mazed I find a way over the bridge that crosses the Heaven sea

Peeling an Orange

After we made love From the kitchen she Brought an orange I began to stretch Yearning to taste the Juices firm as I Attempt to peel Then the same nails That left the marks Did a better job

Exclamation Point

Climax the very first I had driven her there no man had ever done that before not her husband not uncle Willie when he would force himself upon her not even when she joined the mile high club my vehicle to her surprise sprang forth emotion it made her legs weak and she stumbled and fell in love with my interjection

Window Pain

Like Brandy Not wine Canine I sat blind like the Venetians' anticipating Her return

Dodging Raindrops

I held the key to heaven I had the power I could smell in the air Its presence nearing How far from the sky did it fall The first drop The beauty of the dark grey cloud She grabbed my hand My big sister did As we dodged Running towards Haven, heaven, home Huge a near miss The drop that formed on the ground The next that kissed my nose Tickling it just a bit Standing at the door On the opposing side of Haven, heaven, home I stood there being kissed by the rain Giving way to chastity As she, my big sister glared wet with unapproval

Wet Paint

I am the portrait of a smile A picturesque vision of happiness I play the wall Waiting for your cool breeze To complete me

A Slice of PI for Me & AE4U

Shifted gears into reverse Just like the end of the title The last word once again I get Interruption by my tongue I am wishing that now It was with a kiss I dreamed of you On a plate like 3.14LOT The path of logical A missed direction Of pathological joy My eyes travel The curves of your hips My fingers navigate A strand of your hair My mind scales The nape of your neck The reflection of my soul Drowns in the beautiful sea Of your brown eyes As I dine alone I say The words and pray That the wind carries Them to your ears I miss you I love you I lick the apple filling From the corners of my lips Again confronted by the last word While my inspiration's sabbatical A leave of absence I long to interrupt with a kiss

Angels and Butterflies

Feel them fluttering So much time has passed But they remain Not trapped Never hungered Content with tickling The depths of me They hibernate Or do they slumber Until you are near Bringing life to me Alive I am A blush I have become My legs grow weak My stomach mush I have become The minute hand Feeling as if I Have wings

Dealing From the Bottom of the Deck

What vehicle did you use Left and with you went my heart Your reprisal for stealing Quenched with rain Watermelon lemonade And eight butterscotch kisses And I have just An empty sleeve To cry on

Flirtin

Can I have a sip of your Snapple tea Wow you have pretty eyes They say that I am the best they say Not to toot my own horn I like when you wear your hair that way I would walk all the way to Brooklyn for you Just to get a slice of pie

My Eyes Are Smiling Now

Beautiful Brown Oration from the heart to me Through me Articulating every word Eloquent The dialect of love Face to face Addressed me and undressed me Caressing them tenderly Her brown Animated gladness A depiction of what glad is My eyes are smiling now I had a conversation with Dr. King Mother Theresa My Father They spoke of the angel A reflection of her beauty As they peered into my sea of brown Sleep walking through life But now aroused Enticing mesmerizing Sensations of warmth Combustion Attraction Pronounced satisfaction Pleasuring my soul A sweet inspiration of brown No more sadness A depiction of what glad is My eyes are smiling now A captivated gaze

Danced Like jewels Across time Sparkled Like diamonds Held hands through space Her browns and mine Kissed with dreams of tomorrow Song to my future An infinite embrace Insecure no more Her purpose fulfilled Lost in her brown Heaven Bliss A depiction of what glad is My eyes are smiling now

Menu: Special for Today

Kissing over the sounds of our stomachs growling The hunger pains subside Your lips soft and they taste like prize winning apple pie I just can't get enough of Getting my fill, my sugar fix Addicted to like the deepest chocolate Speaking of chocolate I wonder if you'll share a slice of cake with me The special for today it eludes me The only thing that comes to mind is you I won't recall whether this is the first or third kiss

Inheritance

My offspring's acquisition for his children's children my bushy brows and antiqued eyes my wavy hair and chisel the things I have taken on a gentleman's walk down a humble path in this bag bequeath to him were the things that took me further more my serving heart my vessel for God my rise a baker's dozen a kaleidoscope a heredity of wisdom and charisma heir to a mannered well given by the Goddess Marlene a name sake a divine portion and possession of my pen to blaze this humble path which many have mourned to see me disappear but the most prized possession is the vessel for God for in this are true riches

Food For Thought (Anger Management)

she prays for love he refuses to be food for the mantis

Anger Management

you are a.m. and I need the morning your prayer to love this mantis my alarm did not go off it is 8:20 a. m. satisfied and now sleep is eternal

Cream Cheese Frosting From the Red Velvet Cake

How to Seduce the Rain

A dancer with child bearing hips the way she swayed sashayed switched when she walked that pendulum was rhythm enough

Sweet Te'a

Her car was a lemon so we walked to the river bank drank lemonade spread a blanket and watched life become our picnic storm clouds came and even though we had a gazebo for shelter she taught me that day how to seduce the rain

Trojan Heart

I remember When for a brief moment A bird made her nest On my light For the better Casting prosperity In my glow I remember When I found favor In the eyes of the queen When the east wind Consummated with the west When I was on temporary hold When my life was In a family way When all I was digging Was her disposition When winter wore An outfit of white I remember when I met her in the chapel But never made it to the alter I remember coming In small doses When she cut her apple In fours and and offered Me less than half The grass was freshly cut So her intentions were No longer hidden But I was naive Devoured more Than I could chew Sweet sugar from the cane Able to have you I remember The eviction (Continues...)
