Overview

In Indiana's Favorite Restaurants, noted TV personality and columnist Reid Duffy showcases 30 Indiana restaurants that have stood the test of time. All of them have been in existence for 25 years or more, in some cases for several generations. The book offers a gastronomic Who's Who of the Hoosier State from Phil Smidt's restaurant in Hammond and Tippecanoe Place in South Bend, to well-known Indianapolis restaurants such as Acapulco Joe's and Shapiro's, to Chez Jean on the outskirts of Indianapolis, on down to the Red Geranium in the southernmost part of the state. Duffy gives a brief history of each restaurant and comments on its best-known dishes. Each restaurant has provided signature recipes to entice and excite Hoosier palates, including Chanteclair's Steak Diane, Foxfires' Rum-Mango Glazed Pork Chops, Milano Inn's Farfalle with Sausage and Leeks, and the Log Inn's Cheesecake.

The featured restaurants are the Beef House, Covington; Café Johnell, Fort Wayne; Chez Jean, Camby; Das Dutchman Essenhaus, Middlebury; Foxfires, Muncie; Glass Chimney, Carmel; Gray Brothers Cafeteria, Mooresville; Janko's Little Zagreb, Bloomington; Kopper Kettle Inn, Morristown; Log Inn, Warrenton; Maple Corner Restaurant, Covington; Nashville House, Nashville; Overlook Restaurant and Lounge, Leavenworth; Phil Smidt's, Hammond; Red Geranium, New Harmony; Sarge Oak on Main, Lafayette; Story Inn, Story; Strongbow Turkey Inn, Valparaiso; Teibel's Restaurant, Schererville; Tippecanoe Place, South Bend; Welliver's Smorgasbord, Hagerstown; and, in Indianapolis: Acapulco Joe's Mexican Restaurant, Chanteclair, Dodd's Townhouse, Hollyhock Hill, Iaria's Italian Restaurant, Iron Skillet, Milano Inn, St. Elmo Steak House, and Shapiro's Delicatessen.

Besides these 30 dining icons, Duffy includes chapters on comfort-food restaurants featuring distinctive, inexpensive fast food, well-known steakhouses, ethnic restaurants, and a list of new restaurants which the author believes are destined to hold up over the years—92 additional eateries in all.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
None of the 30 Hoosier restaurants that Red Duffy features in this delightful guide is an eatery-come-lately. Each is at least a quarter of a century young, and each has developed a large and loyal constituency. They range from steak houses to ethnic restaurants to gourmet palaces to mom-and-pops; from Indianapolis mainstays to New Harmony retreats. Food buff Duffy celebrates these festive institutions, offering signature recipes for each. If Foxfires' Rum-Mango Glazed Pork Chops won't tempt you, Log Inn's Cheesecake will.
