Overview

Criticas

In a letter to her daughter, Isabel, Inés Suárez reveals the many secrets and adventures she had before she met her husband, Isabel’s father, Rodrigo de Quiroga. Born in Spain to a poor family, Inés traveled to the New World after her first husband, Juan de Málaga, disappeared on his travels there. She arrived in Peru and there met Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conquistador and Chile’s first royal governor. Together they embarked on an intense and passionate affair that changed their lives completely. Varas’s great narration brings to life Allende’s interesting characters and details. Her conversational tone and clear vocalization lend to the confessional style of this story. The sounds, music, and language used throughout help the narrator effectively convey Inés, a woman in her seventies, as well as the character’s emotions during the happiest or most difficult moments. A powerful listening experience.—Jessica Bermúdez , Críticas

As much as I wanted to like this book (and there are great passages), Allende repeatedly breaks the tension during climactic moments by pulling back to the narrator's present and "giving away the ending." Perhaps native Chileans or those versed in their history already know the outcome, but for the rest of us she ruins the suspense time and time again.

Very well written just like Allende knows how to ... Its a great book, history , love, betrayal, a womans fight to love and be loved by a country and by her soul mate.

Isabel's last books weren't as good as the first ones, but this one is really great. War, romance, history...It keeps memories alive, both for South-americans and Spaniards. It manages to make you laugh, cry...Highly recommended
