Harry Yeide does a great job covering the development of the independent tank battalions from their creation in the dark opening days of the war through to their use in all theatres. Along the way, we learn how in the absence of decent written doctrine the troops learned to create their own tactics for successful tank-infantry cooperation. There are appendices setting out the histories of each battalion, as well as lists of battalions used in each major campaign of the war. Photos could have been bigger, and maps more refined, but there are lots of maps so on balance they're ok. The reference section alone is worth the price! Highly recommended.
