Reviewer: Archana NMI Chatterjee, MD PhD(Creighton University)
Description: This one-of-a-kind book is an authoritative resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about infection control in child care centers and preschools. It covers both common and not-so-common infections that affect this population, and offers practical guidance about disease transmission, appropriate policies, and management for specific infections. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a current and easy-to-read reference on infections and infection control in these settings. There is no other authoritative resource like this.
Audience: It is written for child care and preschool providers, pediatricians, family practitioners, and public health officials. It also could be used by other primary care providers such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants and may be of value to emergency room physicians and students/residents/fellows in all of these disciplines. The author is a highly respected authority in this field.
Features: Infections can spread easily in child care centers and preschools. The book begins by focusing on how germs are spread, and what can be done to prevent this from occurring. It then provides guidelines to support infection prevention in these settings, followed by sections on the care of high-risk children and specific infections. Many of the chapters contain tables that summarize information in a concise manner. Cartoon drawings of children at play and engaging in various activities throughout the book make it attractive. The index makes finding information about specific topics easy. The one shortcoming of this book is a lack of references.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource, not only for professionals and trainees, but actually for parents and other caregivers of children who attend child care centers and preschools. The book is well written by a group of experts in the field. There truly is no other book of its kind. This update is needed, because of the changes and advances in the field of infection prevention in these settings.
