Overview

I release you, Lenah Beaudonte. Believe...and be free. Those were the last words I could remember. When I awoke, I immediately felt a cold surface on my left cheek. An icy shiver rushed down my spine. "Rhode!" I screamed. He had to be here. There would be no world without Rhode. A door somewhere near me opened and closed. Rhode loomed over me, but he was a blur. Even in the haze of that moment, his icy-blue eyes pierced me, down to my soul. After centuries of terrorizing Europe, Lenah Beaudonte, with the help of the handsome Rhode, has been able to realize the dream of all vampires-to be human again. Now, as a raven-haired sixteen-year-old, Lenah believes her greatest challenge is fitting in at her new school. But the challenges have only just begun. The vicious coven Lenah once ruled is threatening the new-found pleasures of her human life, including the one guy who makes her feel most alive: Justin. Can this ex-vamp survive in an alien time and place, or will her past come back to haunt her...forever?

Editorial Reviews

"Strong, brave, powerful Lenah sheds the wannabe image, capturing readers instead with her complex yet fascinating history and visceral, at times sensual, narration." ---Kirkus

Gr 9 Up—Lenah Beaudonte awakens to realize her greatest wish has come true in this novel (St. Martin's Griffin, 2010) by Rebecca Maizel. After living for 500 years as a vampire, her creator, Rhode, has turned her back into a human, sacrificing his life in the process. Rhode has placed her in a New England boarding school and Lenah begins her life as a 16-year-old high school student. She revels in her humanity—her ability to touch and feel and taste. Lenah befriends Tony, an outsider artist at her school, and becomes infatuated with the most popular boy, Justin. However the coven that she created and once ruled is now on the prowl for her, and her new world quickly disintegrates. Justine Eyre provides an arrogant, nasal British accent just perfect for Lenah. The opening chapters are fascinating and will draw listeners in. Sexual situations are subtly plotted. Lenah's casual remembrances of brutally murdering humans are chilling. The romance is the weak link in the story, making it difficult to believe that the two characters could be soul-sick to lose one another at the story's conclusion. Despite these flaws, Maizel has created a fresh spin on the vampire story, and this is bound to be a popular addition to the romantic horror genre.—Tricia Melgaard, Centennial Middle School, Broken Arrow, OK

I found this story so interesting. The Author took a whole new approach to vampires. They aren't perfect, far from it and they WANT to be human. Lenah's journey of coming back to humanity 500 years later is amazing. Million times better that Twilight.

What a great start to what looks to be a very exciting series! Maizel had me from the very start. I couldn't believe I was only a few pages in and already completely invested in her characters. It rarely happens, but when the writing is this good, and the emotions are front and center on the page, it's hard to avoid being swept up in everything that's going on. And there was a lot going on from the very beginning. Each and every one of Maizel's characters brought something unique and wonderful to the table. Added that extra spark or much needed element of intrigue to the storyline. Rhode....wow! This is a character that stays with you. Despite his dark past he had a way with words that can be described as nothing but lyrical. He swept me up right along with Lenah, and I was a goner. I thought Maizel's way of having Lenah wake up in a new world and a new time period was perfect for her readers. As Lenah was busy trying to find her way around in order to survive and adapt, readers were able to stay right there with her while having the chance to work on our predictions on what would come next. While Lenah was constantly watching the clocking and counting down her days, I couldn't help but notice my anxiety rose right along with hers. It was a fun read, and one that I think sets the stage for an exciting series. I'm relieved that I waited a bit before picking this title up, because now I won't have to countdown for the second installment in the series, Stolen Nights to be released, because it'll be on the shelves as of June 12...I definitely think I'll be able to hold out a few more weeks.
