    Best book ever

I truly believe this is one of the best books I've ever read. The story of the main character, Nico Bandos, is a tumultous ride through a warped psyche and through the creation of something greater than him. I think, in the end, it is the story of what we all really want. To be worth something.

What if the inmates were in charge of the asylum?

Anything by Barry Longyear is wonderful, but this book is one of the best. Prisoners from all over the galaxy are dumped on one planet with no escape. Now any laws, judgments of right, fairness and punishment must come from the criminals themselves. This book melds suspense and violence with discussions of women's issues, homosexuality, addiction, race, ethics and morality so brilliantly that you don't see the lesson until it's over. The hero, Bandos Nicos, as hardened a criminal as everyone on the planet, struggles with his new job of Police Chief, trying to deliver justice. There are courtroom dramas, executions and even a play. This book is just plain great.

    Oh baby yeah!

This just happens to be my favourite book ever, so I think my review is going to be just a little biased. The story is centred around Bando Nicos, a prisoner in a high-security jail. When the government of Earth decides to dump all of its convicts on the planet of Tarterus (sort of like the Australia of the future, in a sense), Bando is forced along. Of course, Bando and his fellow cons aren't the first on Tarterus, and they soon find themselves fighting for their lives against ex-cons from other prisons. Bando soon finds himself holding the dubious position of Police Chief, acting as judge, jury and executioner. Since most cons have a deep hatred for the Police, Bando fears for his life. However, as he begins to pursue his new career, he makes some interesting revelations on the convict mentality, and begins to learn something about himself along the way. This book is simply amazing. The characters are well-developed, and Longyear does an amazing job on Bando's narrative tone. As Bando begins to discover justice, we're shown a side of the ex-con we might not expect - that of a person. The book contains everything from action, politics, self-discovery, romance, and philosophy, and the reader is guaranteed an excellent read.
