Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Introducing the topic of sexuality to a preteen can be a daunting task. Knowing where to begin and just what to say can be overwhelming. In fact, the topic can be so intimidating that most parents neglect it altogether, even in today's society. As this book reports, only 7% of teens learn about sex from their parents, whereas 45% learn about it from their friends and 29% learn about it from TV. This valuable resource tool can serve as an aid in opening a dialogue about sexuality. It goes beyond a simple discussion about sexual intercourse to also include discussions about gender roles, sexual orientation, peer and school influences, and media and pop culture influences. The topic of sexuality may always be a difficult one for parents, but it should be comforting to know that this book is out there to help ease the burden. It provides accurate, positive information to young teens about their bodies and the changes they are experiencing. Part of the series "Perspectives on Healthy Sexuality." 2001, Capstone Press, $22.60 and $8.95. Ages 11 to 13. Reviewer: Sheree Van Vreede
