It’s tough being a faery in New Orleans, a city fraught with vampires… especially when their very existence drains your life force.

Willow Rhoswen, owner of The Fated Cupcake and part-time vampire hunter for the Void is having a rough week. Four years after her twin brother’s mysterious death, Willow’s life is threatened and the director saddles her with a new partner—her ex-boyfriend, David. To her horror, he’s turned vamp, which causes her physical pain whenever she touches him… and any other specimen of the undead.

In order to save Willow’s life, David agrees to turn double agent against the most powerful vampire organization in New Orleans. Or so he says. And she’s convinced they know something about her brother’s death. Unsure where David’s loyalties lie, she turns to Talisen, her childhood crush, to help her solve the mystery.

Caught between two gorgeous men and a director who’ll stop at nothing to control Willow’s gifts, she’ll have to follow her instincts and learn who to trust. Otherwise, she risks losing more than just her life.

An intoxicating new series by Deanna Chase!!

Meet Willow Rhoswen, by day - owner and creator of incredible edibles at The Fated Cupcake.. by night, she hunts vampires.

As the story unfolds, Willow returns from Northern Cali where she has spent the last few months with Talisen, her dead twin’s best friend, the man she has had a crush on most of her life. Although exhausted from her flight home – Willow has an assignment and in an unexpected twist “reunites” with her ex- boyfriend, who broke up with her via a text message and she has not seen him since – until tonight, outside a New Orleans cemetery. And now he’s turned - he’s a vampire.

The well-paced plot keeps you turning pages into the wee hours of the night and offers up characters you will really come to love.

As a fan of Deanna Chase – I have to agree with a few other reviewers – this book is really, really good – and for me has even surpassed her Bourbon Street series! – And the best news, the next installment of the series will be out in Nov ’13!

Welcome to New Orleans, the early adopter of all things new and

Welcome to New Orleans, the early adopter of all things new and different in the United States (Remember Jazz?).  In a reimagined world where the paranormal are no longer in the closet, Willow has a successful bakery that sells ‘enhanced’ treats that she uses her fae talents as a life-force faerie to bring desired results.  Her second, and most dangerous job is as an agent for the Arcane, the governmental entity charged with maintaining order and keeping paranormals in check.  Her challenge? She is able to sense vampires in the area, making her the ideal partner for her roommate, the witch vampire hunter Phoebe, also Willow’s best friend.

Add in some vampires, good and bad, a love triangle, an evil faerie Aunt and a genealogical link that will threaten Willow’s life as it killed her twin brother Beau, and you have the makings of a rollicking good ride.  With multiple interwoven stories that start off a bit confusing and quickly draw you in to take sides with different characters, this is the start of what I expect will be one of my favorite series.  It isn’t marked as a YA read, but is appropriate for YA readers of 16 or better – and they will appreciate it as much as I did.

Oh – and I almost forgot to mention, Willow has a shifter sidekick, Link.  Masquerading as an ordinary 20 lb Shih-Tzu, he can shift into LARGE wolf form when Willow is agitated or needs protecting. If that isn’t perfect typecasting for a small breed dog with great aspirations, I don’t know what is!

Deanna Chase has created characters and placed them in the steam heat of New Orleans, both shine in this story. While Willow often doubts herself and her abilities, her belief about right and wrong never waver, and she is often the calming influence in the midst of the hot-headed people who surround her.  The men in her life are solidly portrayed, and her best friend Phoebe of the many costumes and faces is someone that everyone would like to know.

I can’t wait to read the rest of this series, and now will have to go check out the author’s other series featuring Jade Calhoun!

I'm a fan of Deanna Chase's Jade Calhoun series, so I was anxious to read her first book in this new series.  Fae, vampires, witches and a shih tzu that phases into a wolf . . . what more could you want?  Throw in murder plots, double agents, twists and turns, a love triangle, and magically enhanced cupcakes and you've got yourself quite the ride.  This isn't a paranormal romance though.  The love triangle is in the background, which is exactly where it should be for this action-packed adventure.  I could totally see this as a tv series, and I can't wait to read the next book!

I must admit that this title caught me by a bit of surprise. It should come as no shock (if you look at my reviews) that I love Urban Fantasy. Some of my all time favorite series are of this genre and I'm sure that list will just continue to grow as I find great new urban fantasy like this title Influential Magic. Now when I say that it kind of caught me by surprise, I don't mean to say that I thought it wouldn't be a good read, because let's be honest who reads a book by choice that they think they aren't going to like in the first place. I just mean to say the synopsis kind of sounded like a mix of a few of my favorite series, which is why it appealed to me in the first place. Now this is where the surprise came to me... although Chase's first installment of her Crescent City Fae series has all the initial elements that make an Urban Fantasy, she has still managed to create an original. With so many great series currently out there dominating this genre, creating an original story line is not an easy challenge, and Chase did a great job rising to the occasion.

The other factor that surprised me was the expected love triangle. I had expected this title to be more focused on the romance elements and more on the two different men staking their claim on Willow. I was so pleasantly surprised that this was not exactly the case for Influential Magic. While there was an obvious mental tennis match going on in Willow's head and heart for the two men that were important to her, the romance was the background to the actual story as apposed to the usual vise verse we commonly see in many books lately. It was refreshing to read a title where I didn't have to be sold on the romance to enjoy the rest of the story.

One other thing I enjoyed about this title was the mix of genre elements. Although it isn't listed as a mystery or an espionage, Influential Magic still gave readers a taste of both. Obviously the primary focus was still on paranormal and urban fantasy, but again it was nice to read a title that gave just a bit more than the usually expected. Overall, I very much enjoyed reading Chase's new series and can't wait to see what happens in the next installment Irresistible Magic, which I believe is due to be released in August 2013!

Wow! I was really surprised by how much I liked this book! The cover is a little misleading - at least is was for me. I was expecting a sort of whimsical fairy story, but instead I got a fast paced vampire/double agent/fairy/love triangle/murder mystery. Whew! There was a lot going on in this book! I think Deanna Chase did a very good job weaving all of the plots together, and a fairly good job developing all of the major characters enough that I was able to care about them.

I really liked Willow, and I was totally Team Talisen. Once or twice I considered jumping off the wagon and rooting for Team David, but their relationship just never felt "right" to me. I was never really sure (much like Willow) if David could be trusted. I liked how the tension and psuedo-love triange was played out almost until the end of the book. And I liked how everything was resolved. It seemed very natural, and not forced.

My only complaint about this book was that I wanted Willow to be a stronger character. I wanted her to have more tricks up her sleeve and be better able to defend herself without having to depend so much on Phoebe or David. She was so dang stubborn, independent, and outspoken, but she didn't really have much to back it up with. I mean, she had Link (who by the way was a totally awesome canine sidekick), but he was also pretty much ineffectual against vampires. And I really became frustrated with how many times she thought that she should have listened to Phoebe and taken self-defense classes while she was getting manhandled. I hope in the next book she does take those classes, or at least invests in a good stun gun or something.

Overall, I really liked this book. It was fast paced and exciting, and had several very good twists that I didn't see coming. I will definitely pick up book #2 when it comes out.

Influential Magic is a fast paced story filled with danger, romance, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. The chemistry between the main characters in off-the-charts intense. Willow is a strong character that takes her job seriously, until David walked back into her life, her only interaction with vampires was to kill them. David seems to be different then all the rest then again, can she really trust him?

Unsure about David's loyalties and motives Willow turns to Talisen. Tailsen was her childhood crush, now seeing him again as an adult, the chemistry between them is electrifying. It is a race against time to save Willow's life and capture her heart. Influential Magic is packed full of suspense, action, romance, humorous moments, and many near death experiences. Once you start you will not be able to put it down!

Willow Rhoswen is a faery. She lives in New Orleans and works as the owner of a bakery, The Fated Cupcake, and as an undercover agent for the Void Agency (supernatural police officer).

After a visit to her home town, Willow returns to New Orleans to find that her ex-boyfriend has been turned into a vampire and has a warning that her life is in danger.

Caught between her fellings for David, her ex-now vampire-boyfriend, and Talisen, her best friends, Willow must decide who to trust and who holds her future.

Hunted by vampires and even the Void agency itself, Willow searches for the truth behind her new gifts. Why do so many paranormals want her and want to control her?

Influential Magic completely intrigued me. I was sucked in from the very beginning and stayed riveted to the pages to the end. Deanna Chase provided a magical adventure with plot twists and turns that will delight all. This is an excellent beginning to what is sure to be a fantastic new series to follow.

This copy of Influential Magic was given to me by Bayou Moon Press, LLC in exchange for a honest review. This book was published March 8, 2013.

Some YA books are borderline New adult and others, this one included, lean more towards the teen side. It is very lollipop and candlyfloss with a few nasty vampires to add to the fluffy faeness of it all.
Now that could be the intended market the author is trying to target and if so then I am sure that younger age group will really enjoy it.
For me it lacked substance and a real connection to the characters. Flitting from one scene to the next without every having time to get to know any of them. Flighty and bubbly all rolled into one.
Having a Shih Tzu that shifts is a new one. It is a cute but odd option to have it shift into something fierce and dangerous. The main character is torn between two love interests and wanting to find out who killed her twin brother. Mix in two supernatural species trying to gain the upper hand in a scientific twist with the main character as the solution to all their troubles and you get this light-hearted read.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley.
