To help kids understand the resources that are available at their local library and what a librarian does, readers visit Mrs. Balotti at the Springfield library. In a large city, personalized services such as taking a book to a patron who is laid up with a sprained ankle are not usually possible, but in a small town they are entirely possible. Also, the first three tasks listed for the librarian (checking out borrowed materials, re-shelving books, and collecting fines) are more likely to be duties assigned to aides or volunteers even in smaller libraries. In Information Please, library services include computer searches and word-processing programs. The librarian willingly takes her lunch hour to deliver a book to a senior citizen. Mail carrier Norma Rivera explains the mail process to a group of third graders in Red Letter Day. The vagaries of small business are represented in A Summer Job as Becka and her family explore solutions to keep their family hardware business from failing. Unassuming and low key in style and illustration, the stories seem almost contrived in their effort to be politically correct.
