Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
This well-organized book is packed with attractive pictures and important information, including facts about the use of inhalants to get high, its use in various countries, the different substances that have been used as inhalants, as well as the extreme dangers presented by this activity. Every few pages, the book offers a "Searching Question," such as "Do you think there is enough information available to let young people know that inhalant abuse is dangerous and can lead to death easily and quickly?" The reading level is slightly above eighth grade, but the books are designed to appeal to students in middle school, with an abundance of photographs and other illustrations, as well as short sections of only one or two pages each on a variety of topics. The in-depth information that high school students might need for a report would have to be supplemented by other sources. The pictures show more males than females and decidedly more whites than people of color, although additional information is provided about the dangers of inhalants in countries where care has not been taken to remove the dangerous chemicals from common substances such as glue. The main text is supplemented with a glossary and reading lists, both print and web-based. This is part of the "Straight Talking" series. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
