Overview

The long-awaited beginning of the fourth story arc - Sword of the Canon - in the epic fantasy series, the Wars of Light and Shadow.Betrayed and double-crossed, Arithon s'Ffalenn is held captive by the Order of the Koriathain. The desperate Fellowship Sorcerers have gambled the weal of Athera and forced through the perilous bargain that spared him, as the last Prince of Rathain, and their sole hope of unity. To suspend the Prime Matriarch's decree of execution, Arithon lives only to battle Marak's horde of free wraiths, unleashed one by one from the shielding grip of the star wards. But on the day the last wraith is redeemed, the inflexible terms sealed by Dakar's oath of debt will come to be forfeit…Against a world backdrop, in which the Religion of Light has undergone schism, the zealot True Sect's canon grips Tysan, its high priesthood stands consumed by its thwarted ambition: to conquer Havish, last crown bastion and backbone of order that secures the terms of Paravian survival. Now Lord Mayor of Etarra, Lysaer s'Ilessid must fight the pull of the Mistwraith's curse, and battle for sanity to uphold his just ethic. Another young defender will stand at his side, newly sworn by the Sorcerer's auspices. As Arithon's life once again becomes the fulcrum that shifts the game board, Elaira's choice might save or break the unstable future; while at large and answerable to no mortal law, Davien and the dragon that holds his service throw in the wild card no one predicts…

Though the fortunes of the world rise and fall, the enmity between half brothers Arithon s'Ffalenn, Prince of Rathain, and Lysaer s'Hessid, Prince of Tysan, continues unabated. Arithon wastes away in a magical prison kept by members of the Order of the Koriathain. Lysaer, meanwhile, fights a constant battle to prevent the powers of the Mistwraith from overcoming him. A daughter's sacrifice, a betrayer's service to his dragon master, a divided religion, and a world in turmoil are the launch pads for the ninth novel in Wurts's "The Wars of Light and Shadow" series as well as the beginning of a new story arc. The author of Sorcerer's Legacy demonstrates a formidable command of epic storytelling as a multitude of characters spring to life against a richly detailed world of magical and divine powers, human courage, and the unshakeble bond between two powerful siblings. VERDICT A must-read for series fans as well as a starting point for newcomers, this represents the best of multivolume fantasy.

I've been following this series since it began and I'm still a fan. The beginning of this book was a surprise; 250 years have passed since the end of the previous book Stormed Fortress. This provides many new characters although the major players with arcane longevity remain the same. While much of the plot was familiar (Arithon is still on the run and blamed for everything that happens) some of the sub plots from previous books have been resolved in that lapsed time. I enjoyed some new insights. Lysaer is portrayed in a more sympathetic light as he fights the mistwraith's curse. Dakar shows more competence as a sorcerer even as he no longer enjoys the Fellowship's protection. The connection between Arithon, the desert tribes, and the Koriathain Prime finally solidified for me. Overall, I thought this was a good addition to the series and I look forward to the next one.

Not too much new here except we jump 250 years forward.. this book was copyrighted in 2010 and the next book is not available. Still too many unanswered questions pending a future book. By the title, I expected some involvement with the priests but other than Lysaer using his power again, there was no real interaction. I have stuck with this series and would love to see it move towards closure. Then we could read some of her other books.

Weather Report Praetors are the only ones to post here! Check the "phyrne fisher" series weather report book to know the season. We otherwise have our own weather, because of our unique geography, which causes things from storms to tornadoes, to heavy fogs. Currently, there is a light breeze running through the forest and grassland from the east, while snow is starting to fall near the mountains.
~LB

The sun is shining today around the forest, grasslands and ocean. Mostly cloudy up north in the mountains, but not even a breeze blows.

I'll write more of a review later, but for now just want to comment on the weird fact that all of her ebooks are available only after you click on this one! What kind of idiot marketing strategy is that? How do you propose to beat Amazon with that kind of lunacy? Good god, Barnes & Noble. I'm rooting for you but get a grip! If you want to sell books, you have to show them as available on the main page, not as an 'oh by the way, there are more books by this author below'. STUPID!
