Editorial Reviews

Quill & Quire
[An exceptionally well-designed book.
Winnipeg Free Press
You want embroidered cuffs? Floral inserts? A fancy denim skirt? This is the book for you.
Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Jeans have been a staple of American clothing for decades. This is a garment that is not about to disappear any time soon. Sturdy, fashionable, and easily modified, jeans are the perfect palette for young teens to play out their fashion designer fantasies. A sewing machine makes this process much easier, but hand sewing is also an option for those with sturdy fingers. Embroidery is the easiest way to modify a pair of jeans. The embroidery can be the equivalent of drawing with thread or applique that uses stitching to add fabric to create designs. Embroidery can be done on any portion of the jeans. Decorating the inside or outside of the cuff can add a change of pace depending on the season. Fringe, buttons, and ribbon can be added to cuffs. More elaborate alternations are necessary for turning a pair of jeans into a skirt, a halter, or adding bellbottom flares to the legs. Jeans can be cut up to make slippers, purses, and even book covers. The more ambitious will try covering a plastic crate with foam and denim to make a footstool. Simple illustrations and step-by-step instructions are included with each project. Most of these projects require a sewing machine and good sewing skills for success.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Warwick combines a love of denim with some simple crafts that will have readers thinking and feeling like fashion designers. The projects use old jeans and show how, with some simple embellishments and very little cash, they can create a whole new wardrobe, among other items. The book begins with all the important stuff such as parental permission to cut up clothing and the basics of sewing and working with the fabric. It includes 17 projects from re-wearable jeans to purses and wallets to bolsters and footstools to halters and skirts and more. All include clear, easy-to-follow instructions and informative illustrations. The artist has depicted a variety of hip-looking girls in cartoon style to help show the way. They provide an energetic invitation to try the projects. Many of the crafts could be done in a classroom or library setting-if you can get the volume away from the girls long enough to plan the program.-Cynde Suite, Bartow County Library System, Adairsville, GA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
