Description: This book summarizes the contributions to and/or proceedings of an international symposium on innate immunity to pulmonary infection, held at University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa in November 2005. The book offers 15 state-of-the-science or review papers from an eclectic group of international experts, each followed by transcribed discussion offered by selected members of the symposium's 33 participants.
Purpose: In aggregate, a comprehensive attempt is made to adopt observations of authorities from diverse, worldwide experience, providing a comprehensive, up-to-date reference for investigators and less so for practitioners.
Features: Although the book deals with a variety of subjects, it is selective and not intended to be comprehensive. While substantially elucidating recent basic science observations of potentially remarkable importance in understanding human biology and furthering novel therapeutic approaches to infectious diseases, it provides information beyond that required for practical application by the typical practitioner.
