Meditation:Developing Peace within Ourselves and in the World

One day a few years ago while teaching a class of university students, I asked: ¿What above everything else, would you like for yourself and for the world we live in?¿ After a minute¿s reflection they each jotted down their responses, many of which included¿to have peace of mind and to experience personal happiness while living peacefully in the world.

A most timely book by Rajinder Singh, Inner and Outer Peace through Meditation, sheds light on how to achieve these worthy aspirations As a lifelong practitioner, the author attests from personal experience that the most direct path to inner understanding is through meditation.

As a student Rajinder Singh had as his spiritual guides the great 20th century Indian Masters, Sant Darshan Singh and Sant Kirpal Singh. In his present global role as a highly respected spiritual teacher, Sant Rajinder Singh has distilled the essence of Surat Shabd Yoga meditation techniques, providing a clear and practical pathway for developing inner peace in our contemporary world. His approach is integrative and balances the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of human experience.

Inner and outer Peace through Meditation will benefit seekers who are beginning their explorations of life¿s inner journey, as well as those who are well along the way. The author teaches a simple method that persons of all ages as well as those of differing educational, social and cultural backgrounds can understand and practice.

The book¿s opening chapters bring forth many general benefits of meditation and other contemplative practices, including improved physical/mental health and stress reduction. Then the author turns to the heart of his message: that provides vital nurturance for the well-being of the soul. He writes: ¿If we withdraw our attention from the outside and collect it at the seat of the soul during meditation, we can enter into the source of happiness and bliss awaiting us within.¿

Each chapter ends with hands-on exercises helpful to developing fruitful meditative and mindfulness practices. Emphasis is also given to following a nonviolent way of life within one¿s family, community and society.

In 1989 Sant Rajinder Singh founded Science of Spirituality, a worldwide non- profit and non-denominational organization whose adherents come from many ethnic, religious and secular backgrounds. He travels to every continent freely offering the gift of meditation, and spreading a universal message of love, peace and human unity.

In his forward to Inner and Outer Peace, the Dalai Lama writes: ¿I greatly appreciate Sant Rajinder Singh¿s contributions here to the goal of peace that we are all working towards....¿ The book has become a classic, and its re-publication by Radiance Press is welcomed. Its wisdom and heartfelt concerns remain very relevant today, as a divided world seeks to restore its balance and recognize its shared humanity.

Arthur Stein is Professor Emeritus at the University of Rhode Island, and a co-founder of the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. Author of several books, he currently offers courses in the URI Honors program on such topics as ¿Meditation, Mindfulness and Peacebuilding: East and West.¿
(providing this info on the reviewer is optional-- up to Barnes and Noble)

The best book on meditation I have come across

This book provides clear and helpful background, instructions and practice activities that help a beginner learn to meditate, and help experienced meditators improve their practice. It is not only well written, it's inspiring. It provides the reader with an understanding of the benefits of meditation and helps someone new to this topic understand why there is so much interest in meditation now a days. It is obvious that the author is an expert in this area, and is an expert teacher as well. I have read many books on this topic. This is certainly the best.

    A must read

'Inner and Outer Peace Through Meditation' by Rajinder Singh, is a truly inspiring book which teaches you how to practice the art of meditation. The author provides many practical tips and techniques for beginners as well as for experienced meditators. More importantly, this book not only explains the spiritual and physical benefits of meditation, but how meditation can transform all of our lives in such a positive way to make this a more peaceful world.

    Great read...

I found this book easy to read, understand and the activities were pretty useful. You can read it all at once or contemplate one chapter at a time. It's hard to find books addressing meditation that explain things as well as I read here. I recommend Inner and Outer Peace through Meditation to those interested in learning more about the simplicities of meditation as well as those interested in daily introspection and interconnection.
