Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
R. Carlos Nakai often records his Native American flute music using the dramatic echoes of the Southwest's red canyon walls. On INNER VOICES his music is cradled by a 40-piece string orchestra. This gentle -- almost reverential -- approach suits Nakai's soothing sound and meditative melodies. Billy Williams's sophisticated score might remind you of Aaron Copland's pastoral Americana, especially as the album is centered around the hymn "Amazing Grace." INNER VOICES seems far from hard rocks and cacti; this album's as smooth as cashmere.

Featuring recastings of past compositions, Inner Voices teams the haunting Native American flute of R. Carlos Nakai with the sumptuous yet delicate string arrangements of Billy Williams. It's an opportunity to hear Nakai in something of a different setting, and it's also a highly effective setting: his melodies thrive under the string treatments, and his playing throughout is meditative yet compelling. The overall tone of the album is pleasantly engaging, suitable for foreground listening as well as background.

    Tranquility

This is one of his best(besides Earth Spirit). The most soothing and tranquil flute of R. Carlos Nakai cannot help but bring you inner peace and this cd does that. There is nothing that disappoints on this cd. The symphony with these recordings only enhance his soulful flute. This is a very pleasant blend. I first heard Nakai when visiting the Grand Canyon and was immediately hooked. His soothing and haunting flute brings you back to a place where the earth, wind, and sky speaks to the soul and he does on this.

    Disapointing

I am used to Carlos' wonderful music. On this though it is like Carlos Light or Carlos meets Manilow. Heavy orchestral background drown out his wonderful flute. It is light the Native American music is an afterthought or additive. Perhaps an attempt to reach an wider audience. I you are a dedicated Nakai fan I'd skip this one.

    Absolutely Divine

Mr. Nakai has produced a wondrous CD of soothing music. After a long day at work, in school, and then running errands, this CD has offered me peace of mind every time...when I'm alone at night with a cup of tea.
